I was happy to contribute to @deandad.bsky.social's timely question about how we can adapt in the current era of higher education.

Viewpoint diversity would be hiring someone at Associate Professor rabk from a small nonelite teaching school in the Plains. It'd be an actually diversity of view point, rather than political leanings within the same white elite upper coastal class. But cool, yo, hire some Nazis I guess.
Grad students who want to learn about teaching at access-oriented institutions, and faculty at those institutions--this is for you!
Sad to hear about Hampshire. It's a quirky little place in a world increasingly hostile to quirky little places. It wasn't for me, but I hate to see it go.
This wasn't the point of the article, but I've been trying to figure out why the stock market continues to climb even when there's chaos in the real economy.
Could it be simply that having far fewer companies on the public market reduces the denominator? www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...
One of Saturn's small inner moons from two angles. It looks like a ilttle circular ravioli or pirogi. This one is named Pan, which is also something you could cook a ravioli in.
why didn't anybody tell me that saturn has "ravioli moons"? WHY DIDN'T THEY TELL ME ABOUT THE RAVIOLI MOONS?
Happy anniversary to all who celebrate (the greatest celebrity-on-celebrity social media takedown of all time)
Absolutely remarkable statement from Pope Leo today.

Years ago, when the kids wouldn't get out of bed, I'd horrify them with my rendition of Lady Gaga's "Poker Face."
The dog actually howled.
In my defense, it worked...
This column by @deandad.bsky.social matches my experience at the graduate level...many students now prefer a majority of classes being online in a traditionally in-person evening program. But students still want (and international ones need) some on-campus classes, creating scheduling dilemmas.
Terrific piece by @carlsonics.bsky.social about three-year bachelor's degrees. I'd add confirmation of Baumol's cost disease. www.chronicle.com/article/fast...
Clearly, he's not a student of history. Because if he was, he'd know that the one time the federal government did "take care of daycare," they did it *because of a war* and used defense funding to pay for it. 1/🧵
And a golden calf.
Thinking out loud about what happens if your politics revolve mostly around two rules:
1. Everyone deserves a baseline level of respect.
2. Ain't nobody special.

"Every citizen or subject of another country, while domiciled here, is within the allegiance and the protection, and consequently subject to the jurisdiction, of the United States."
A very real problem with our foreign policy is that we are able to easily kill for causes we don’t actually think are worth dying for
"In higher ed, customers aren’t always right. If they were, they wouldn’t need higher education in the first place." www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...
I’m a fan of Bruce Cockburn’s “Nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight/you’ve got to kick at the darkness ‘til it bleeds daylight…”
Sorry to hear about Steve Rose. He was a terrific colleague in my time at Brookdale, helping me navigate the idiosyncratic waters of New Jersey higher ed politics. He hired well, kept a level head, and was steadfastly kind and sane. I'll miss him. pccc.edu/president-ro...
Truths About Writing Most people will ignore what you write Someone dead did it better than you You will be misunderstood That's all ok
Note from my notebook (2017).
Reminded of Sloterdijk’s definition of cynicism as enlightened false consciousness.
“I must make clear, the current national campaign of mass detention and deportations is a grave moral evil, one which must be opposed, with prayer, peaceful action and acts of solidarity with those affected,” El Paso Bishop Mark Seitz wrote: www.americamagazine.org/politics-soc...
No, Utah, "conscientious objector" status doesn't make sense when being there in the first place is optional. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...
Pope Leo this week called universal health coverage a "moral imperative."
He also said: “Health cannot be a luxury for the few,” it is “an essential condition for social peace.”
One thing that AI evangelists seem to assume, particularly legal AI evangelists assume, is that the thinking and analysis is quick, and the writing is just tedious busywork that slows us down.
But the writing IS the thinking and analysis. You work out the thinking and analysis by writing it down.
Cardinal Pizzaballa: "The abuse and manipulation of God’s name to justify this and any other war is the gravest sin we can commit at this time. ... If God is present in this war, He is among those who are dying, ... suffering, ...in pain, ... oppressed in various ways, throughout the Middle East."
