Yes, they know it’s effective to puff up his image in really superficial ways. Whereas a full frontal attack (which they tried in his last term) accomplished nothing. Just makes him and his fans dig in deeper. They’re trying a different approach.

My take on this is it’s a backhanded gift. Donating to his inaugural fund is not like donating to his campaign - it really doesn’t help him in any meaningful way. It’s just a performative way to flatter him, which they know is effective. And a million dollars is chump change to those guys.

Sadly I think that’s exactly right. I think a lot of men who’ve done some “regrettable” things think that those things might now be called rape. And they may be right. Not sure what we do about that.
