Very pleased that my paper with Manuel Heckel, 'Norm Circles and Critical Realism' is out in the JTSB, part of a special issue on norm circles in social research: dx.doi.org/10.1111/jtsb...
Very grateful to @crnetwork.bsky.social and specifically Gareth Wiltshire for this podcast, which @jpelonga.bsky.social and I really enjoyed recording. Some things emerge in this conversation that aren't in the book!
Vol 25 #1 of Journal of Critical Realism is now online! Including papers by Stine Harboe, Marc Bosward, Zeynep Ceren Henriques Correia, reviews of Ash's book on ethics and Slade-Cafferel's on Cambridge social ontology, and part 2 of Jamie Morgan's interview with Ted Benton ...
An ethnographic study on the replication crisis suggests psychological phenomena are ‘enacted’ in practice, shaped by emotions & relational dynamics. But does this overlook the independent reality of phenomena? Thought-provoking take on the replication debate.

The background image is ‘SPELLING’ written using cubes on an orange background. This is overlaid with the ‘Educational Review’ journal title at the top. In the middle is the article title and author name(s): ‘“It’s just about printing the list, getting children to copy them”: some teachers’ experiences of the Key Stage 2 national curriculum for spelling in English primary schools’ by Kathryn Cawley, Sarah Critten, Helen L. Breadmore & Julia M. Carroll. The words “Open Access” appear in a red circle.
📘 Cawley et al. argue there are significant gaps & inconsistencies in the national curriculum guidance on the teaching of #spelling, which in turn leads to a lack of teacher confidence in spelling tuition and non-optimal teaching strategies.

Brilliant 🤩 It’s fascinating how reality itself is often ignored in order to maintain materialist ontology.
Great conversation with Darren from the Seeking I podcast. We discuss children's strange experiences, the social world and what reality might be

We've all heard about the replication crisis in psychology. But psychologists have been calling "crisis" for as long as the discipline has been around. Ali Teymoori and I look at this history and what it means for today's crisis. #philsky doi.org/10.1177/1089...

A similar tension has emerged in the current discussions surrounding the replication crisis. Reformers in the open science movement emphasize reproducible and stable effects, such that experimental outcomes support drawing inferences about psychological phenomena. In contrast, challengers of direct replication argue that a lack of consistent experimental effects signifies either underdevelopment in the theoretical framework or variability across time, context, setting, and procedure, hinting at a flexible construction of the object of psychological investigation (cf. Feest, 2024; Morawski, 2022). Hence, the disagreement goes deeper than research practices and stems at least in part from different understandings of the ontological status of the psychic object (stable vs. flexible object).
