Three book covers in an L-shape against a light yellow background. SMALL! (Bright orange cover featuring a boy looking up at a giant) is top left. SMALL BITES BACK (Light blue, featuring a zombie skeleton-elephant holding a boy in his trunk) is below it. HELP! Aliens Stole My Grandad (purple, with a green, many-tentacled alien pirate captain and yellow, cratered moon) is bottom right.
Twxt on the yellow background says: I love my book covers. All three do the best job at capturing the fun, madcap energy behind every story. But here’s what you can’t see…

Same orange cover of SMALL against a light orange background. Text below it: In SMALL! you can’t see that Harvey blames himself for his parents’ divorce. He carries the belief that he’s bad news everywhere he goes, including to Madame Bogbrush’s School for Gifted Giants.

Authors, what can’t you judge about your books from their covers?
I LOVE my covers (all designed by Holly Ovenden and illustrated by Rory Walker). They capture the madcap energy of the books perfectly. But there are some things you can’t see…

A cardboard ‘parrot’ with a tube-shaped green body and yellow breast. Orange pipe cleaner les, one red feather wing, one green feather wing. Orange head, googly eyes, yellow beak and green feather at top of head. Very much homemade looking. Sitting on green sofa against bright yellow wallpaper with spikey green plant designs

Aside from the actual writing, daft crafting has to be my favourite part of being a children’s author. This flappy friend is a prototype for the ‘speak-like-an-alien-pirate-and-make-a-lucky-parrot’ workshops I’m hoping to run when Help! Aliens Stole my Grandad comes out!

Happy World Book Day one and all! Feel a bit sorry to be spending the day in an office and not a costume-filled classroom, but I’m celebrating in spirit.

*And* I should be ending this week with some nice news that I’m finally allowed to share tomorrow!

Well this was a different start to a Sunday! Had a ball celebrating World Book Day and International Women’s Day as a guest on Gene Radio (a monthly 2-hour show for the girl guiding community in Chelmsford). And I left with my own guiding badge! #WorldBookDay #GirlGuides

I’ve seriously considered getting a typewriter! I didn’t think I had AI on Word and was terrified to see the Word app on my phone offering to give me a Copilot summary of my manuscript today 😩

Update now I’ve read the proof to say it’s utterly delightful. Clever concept, great characters and and a good environmental message that isn’t too heavy handed. Also, how can you not love a character called Tuftorius Snook?& 💕

Proof copy of Finders of Silverthorn Forest (title in chunky red letters against a mostly green background with leaves and flowers. And the head of a grey fox-like creature with bushy eyebrows with its paw on a yo-yo). The book is in a light blue box with the gingham cloth is was wrapped in underneath and a hint of the other goodies inside the proof pack- luggage label, edge of a fruit pastels packet and corner of a packaged tea bag.

The government doesn't understand that the power, control and money in generative AI sits with who owns the numerical data, music, voices, images and text needed to train the models.
AI models themselves will soon be cheap and plentiful. The way to make money is to create, own & control the content.

Children facing a ‘happiness recession’ says laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce Author will highlight the ‘enormous disadvantage’ handed to children without access to books, and call on government to improve early-years literacy

We are so damned lucky to have @frankcottrellboyce.bsky.social as our Children's Laureate. If things are ever going to improve, we need people addressing our politicians directly, loudly and repeatedly. www.theguardian.com/books/2025/j... #KidLitUK #KidLit

It doesn’t take a genius to see how much revenue artists and authors bring into a country, and yet here we are with a supposedly progressive government telling creatives they should let AI steal all their work 🥲

When you work in @britishlibrary.bsky.social they recommend taking a snap of your locker so you don’t forget it … meaning my phone is full of shots like these!
Thanks a million to the staff at The British Library for making it such a joyful, peaceful place to work. #WritingCommunity
