Why Justice Sotomayor's apology to Justice Kavanaugh makes sense There are just nine votes on the court, and each time they cast those votes they’re setting the rules that all of us need to live under for now. Sotomayor knows that.

An apology can simply be a business strategy. Good post by Chris Geidner. www.lawdork.com/p/justice-so...? h/t @chrisgeidner.bsky.social

"Sorry but" is never good.

Totally agree, JJ!

We don't have context because the original post is gone, but this sure seems like a good apology. It uses the word "apologize" (well, "apologise," but y'know, British) takes ownership, shows understanding of the harm done, makes amends.

LinkedIn post from Deepak Chopra, reading: "I am deeply saddened by the suffering of the victims in this case, and I unequivocally condemn abuse and exploitation in all forms. I want to be clear: I was never involved in, nor did I participate in, any criminal or exploitative conduct. Any contact I had was limited and unrelated to abusive activity. Some past email exchanges have surfaced that reflect poor judgment in tone. I regret that and understand how they read today, given what was publicly known at the time. My focus remains on supporting accountability, prevention, and efforts that protect and support survivors."

List of the six and a half steps to a good apology: 1. Say you're sorry. 2. For what you did. 3. Show you understand why it was bad. 4. Don't make excuses. 5. Say why this won't happen again. 6. Make amends. 6.5. LISTEN to those you harmed.

This statement from Deepak Chopra (whose MANY emails to Epstein, post-2008 conviction, included "bring your girls") is crap. "Saddened" and "regret" are about CHOPRA, not about how others have been harmed. All he's guilty of is poor judgment! He's a hero! 0/6 in our framework for a good apology.

Re: Kanye West's apology: Brain injuries and bipolar disorder do not cause antisemitism. Blaming those things for separating you from your “true self” means not taking responsibility for what you've done ... which is one of the key elements of a good apology.

SorryWatch - Analyzing apologies in the news Our Book! Sorry, Sorry, Sorry: The Case for Good Apologies (the hardcover), aka Getting to Sorry (the paperback) is a synthesis of everything we’ve learned from working on this site for the last decad...

We started SorryWatch.com back in 2012. It didn't take long for us to decide not to parse the apologies of mentally ill people. (We've specifically told interviewers we're not interested in talking about Kanye or Roseanne Barr.)

This is a good apology. Takes ownership, names the offense, acknowledges the harm done, uses the word “apologies” (not “regret,” which is about self rather than other). Also, we generally prefer media not to delete a record of what was published; Kruse preserved AND shared what he did wrong. Bravo.

We do think our book does that. Getting to Sorry, by Marjorie Ingall and Sidan McCarthy, 2024. We look at good and bad apologies in history as well as research on the impact of good and bad apologies.

#166 - Friendship Repair: How to Say I'm Sorry, Accept Apologies, and Ask for One Marjorie Ingall joins Dear Nina this week to discuss how to apologize to a friend and how to accept an apology.

I got to interview the wise and wonderful @marjorieingall.bsky.social who knows everything there is to know about saying “I’m sorry,” accepting apologies, and soliciting one when necessary. This was such a good (and useful!) conversation.

Photo of an orange street sign that reads "Titi's Empanadas, Coffee & More!", with a cute cartoon of a woman with her hair tied back with a kerchief, holding a plate of stylized orange and yellow empanadas. A small blue Post-It can be seen on the sign.

Via @evgrieve.bsky.social; a group of fratty fellows were caught on video stealing an East Village empanada shop's sign. The shop shamed them on Insta & asked for help ID'ing them. The next night, a person in a hoodie, sunglasses & ski mask returned the sign...with an apology Post-It.

Photo of Byron and employee canoodling at Coldplay concert juxtaposed with Byron’s apology: “What was supposed to be a night of music and joy turned into a deeply personal mistake playing out on a very public stage. I want to sincerely apologize to my wife, my family, and the team at Astronomer. You deserve better from me as a partner, as a father, and as a leader.

“This is not who I want to be or how I want to represent the company I helped build. I'm taking time to reflect, to take accountability, and to figure out the next steps, personally and professionally. I ask for privacy as I navigate that process.

“I also want to express how troubling it is that what should have been a private moment became public without my consent. I respect artists and entertainers, but I hope we can all think more deeply about the impact of turning someone else's life into a spectacle.fi

Blaming Coldplay in your apology is certainly a choice.
