initially thought they were an oribatid beetle mite... then freaked out upon taking a few photos - realizing they were BAEUS - a *tiny* (~600µm) parasitic wasp!
Lost them after trying to stop lens down for a bit more depth of field! Underneath a log, NE Oklahoma

I had a great time answering listener questions with Daniel and Kelly!
Folks are smart and really dial into the incisive questions.
A new listener questions episode is up! Daniel & Kelly are joined by Dr. @debivort.bsky.social to answer questions genetics! How many of our genes influence behaviors? How much of our DNA does nothing at all? How are innate behaviors encoded by our genes? and more!

I bought the first book in the series for my oldest, and she absolutely devoured it! she was doing artwork inspired by the world in the book and everything. I managed to snag an early copy of “We Are Dragon” and she absolutely adored the entire series!

I'm so glad you enjoyed A City on Mars! I hope you enjoy Soonish as well!! :)
I got to talk about a bunch of particularly creepy parasites in this episode. <3 This episode also made me wonder if we should ask @jimmybernot.bsky.social come on the show to talk more about parasitic crustaceans..... hmm....
Thank you! She seems to be feeling much better this morning. This is our first birth on the farm and we are learning a lot. :-) I hope your first time moms have no issues!
The harness was a bit too big, but I improvised and between the harness and the ewespoon she seems to be a much happier gal this morning!
I did! Seems to be working great!
Goats have quickly become some of my absolute favorite animals. I adore these Nigerian goats in particular. They're a ton of fun, really affectionate, and really curious. Absolute chaos as well though. :)
We purchased a pregnant dairy goat because we, well, want goat milk. And because baby goats are adorable. Anyway, turns out she has a prolapse. So this is what tonight is going to look like for me.
It's called Daniel and Kelly's Extraordinary Universe ( @dandkuniverse.bsky.social ). I would LOVE to have you on a guest and I would LOVE a copy of your new book!
Thank you!
Thank you both for your thoughts on this! Much appreciated!
Thanks, @josephusbrown.bsky.social and @andyrs313.bsky.social !
Thank you very much for asking your bat friend, and for sharing that paper with me! I really appreciate it.
I'm not finding a scientific paper that says that. Can anyone point me towards some scientific papers I can use to help answer a listener question for @dandkuniverse.bsky.social ? And if bats have valves that help out - do geckos have that too? Thanks!
Why don't species like frogs and geckos that hang upside down get dizzy? I believe dizziness is a combo of blood rushing to head & disturbance of vestibular system. I'm seeing websites saying that, e.g., bats have valves in their arteries and veins that help them sleep upside down at night - but ½
One of us studied animal behavior in graduate school, and one of us didn't....
I think it probably has happened, @zachweinersmith.bsky.social think it probably hasn't...
I get a shout out! Thanks @weinersmith.bsky.social!
me either, but it's better than the alternative, as they say...
Ha! Time flies. You can only laugh about it. :) thanks for sharing!
on no! i’m Sure we both look young and vibrant, and our kids will get a handle on their historical timelines soon….
Kid 1 just asked if I remember watching The Wizard of Oz when it came out as a kid (and yes, she meant the original 1939 version). So if anyone is wondering if I feel old today, the answer is yes.
