How bad does ICE have to be for us to defend cops?

House Bill 4764 will require SC law enforcement agencies with jails to work with ICE. Tell your local representative to VOTE NO and keep ICE from going even further into our communities.

What is the 1A Ordinance?

In a 2021 session with no public input, Charleston City Council implemented this draconian ‘First Amendment Ordinance,’ which made organizing safe protests nearly impossible. Approval to exercise our Constitutional right is now entirely at the discretion of City Council and Chief of Police.

Attempts from churches to host public vigils, organizers trying to hold Free Palestine rallies, and people just wanting to express their frustration with the Trump administration have all been illegally prevented by the city or brutalized by Charleston police.

This crackdown comes as part of a broader trend of anti-free speech and peaceful assembly from not only the city of Charleston, but the county, the state, and the nation.

Sign our petition and keep up to date with how you can help demand our First Amendment rights be restored!

On election night, socialist candidates around the country showed up and won big. From Kelsea Bond in Atlanta to Zohran Mamdani in New York City, we challenged developers, landlords, outdated paradigms... and defeated them!

While we celebrate these victories, we also recognize that our fight must continue. Until all workers and tenants can live with dignity; until all children go to bed fed and housed; until we can exercise our First Amendment rights in Charleston; until Palestine is free... we struggle onwards.

Charleston DSA is fighting against Charleston County’s unfair tax breaks that support Palestinian genocide by partnering with the Elbit Out of SC campaign. We are fighting for our right to free speech and assembly against the City of Charleston’s unconstitutional “1st Amendment Demonstration” ordinance with our First Amendment Restoration campaign.

With only 600 votes required to win certain Charleston City Council seats and momentum building, the message is clear: We can win by putting pressure on elected officials, increasing our visibility and solidarity within the community, and demonstrating leadership through our campaigns. The DSA is building socialism and progressive policies in the South, so join DSA today to help us fight for a better world!
