I firmly believe presidents & people with control over medical agencies should understand percentages!

If *you* don’t, no judgment; I will explain in the next couple posts how they work. The short version is that Senator Warren is correct in the clip, and there’s NO interpretation in which RFKJr is

and Ben Bradlee had to fight hard for them to keep it! as soon as it became something that looked like something, the White House reporters wanted to take it over and use it to burnish their access credentials, but Bradlee and Graham cared more about getting the story right

One thing you will never think after reading a great book or listening to a great album or seeing a great piece of art is, “I’m really glad this person remained cautious while they were making this and guarded against being perceived as weird.”

Musk sighs heavily when asked about robotaxis in Europe, and says it's unlikely anytime soon, given how hard it was to get FSD "supervised" approved by Dutch officials

Musk doesn't even guess at a time frame, proving it's possible for him to not just say "end of the year" in these situations

Musk says he expects Optimus to be "useful outside of Tesla sometime next year." For those following along at home, that's another timeline slip.

He continues to believe that Optimus will be "the biggest product of all time." So that's a relief.

The Disappearance of the Public Bench Benches are microcosms of an expansive debate about who belongs in urban public spaces. When they are removed or made uninviting, we lose more than just a place to rest.

"Benches are where optimistic visions of civic life meet reality. To remove them, or to curate who gets to sit, is to abandon the work of defining a civic ideal and determining, together, how to live up to it."

NEW: Why benches are slowly disappearing from public spaces — and why we need them back:

During the whole mess re the Wile E Coyote film becoming a write-off & deep-sixed, it never occurred to me to wonder if they'd actually done it with *real* old-school animation (blended into the live action). I just imagined somehow that they had...

Much less interested after seeing the trailer.

RFK Jr. rejects cornerstone of health science: Germ theory In his 2021 book vilifying Anthony Fauci, RFK Jr. lays out support for an alternate theory.

think we need to track how many members of trump's cabinet accept the basic tents of nineteenth century science, because we've got two who reject germ theory

Reagan's deepest appeal is to those who cheered George Wallace on but who felt a bit shabby and soiled after he worked them over, massaged their hate glands, made them queasy with acrid emotions sweated out of them. Reagan croons, in love accents, his permission to indulge a functional hatred of poor people and blacks. Nothing personal about it.
It is really an act of patriotism not to let the hardworking middle class be dragged down to their level. Imagine what a godsend this is for right-wingers with some small claim left them to fastidiousness. Poor William Buckley had to fashion a nine-foot pole for dealing with all those Spiro Agnew types a gentleman should not touch with a ten-foot pole. But Ronnie he can walk right up to and hug. Even the caricaturists have a hard time putting Joe McCarthy's scowl or Agnew's dopey viciousness on Reagan's face.

Comparing old & new images of the Trifid Nebula, we can see how this gas cloud has changed over three decades. Newborn stars are shooting out jets of plasma, stirring the nebula, and the stars are drifting through our galaxy.

Cosmic evolution before our eyes! 🔭🧪

1961 Trifid Nebula in Sagittarius Poster, NGC 6514 California Institute of Technology and Carnegie Institution, Hale Observatories. Square shows the approx location of the new Hubble image.

This closeup image of the Trifid Nebula (Messier 20 or M20) captured by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope’s Wide Field Camera 3 (WFC3) shows compass arrows, scale bar, and colour key for reference.

A jet of plasma ejected by a young protostar embedded in the brown dust, known as Herbig-Haro 399 (HH 399) is labeled, along with its suspected counter jet.

The north and east compass arrows show the orientation of the image on the sky. Note that the relationship between north and east on the sky (as seen from below) is flipped relative to direction arrows on a map of the ground (as seen from above).

At the bottom left, the scale bar is labeled in light-years, which is the distance that light travels in one Earth-year (it takes one year for light to travel a distance equal to the length of the scale bar). One light-year is equal to about 9.46 trillion kilometers.

The new Hubble image zeroes in on a tiny portion of the old image of the Trifid Nebula. It also zeroes in on elements: sulfur (red), hydrogen (green), and oxygen (blue).

Keep in mind, the old image was the best image taken by the biggest telescope on Earth. 🧪🔭

When I was a kid, there were just a handful of iconic deep-space images (mostly from Mt Palomar) that got printed over and over. Books, magazines, posters, even TV shows.

If you watched old Star Trek, you've seen this version of the Trifid Nebula. 🧪🔭

Hot tip for Summer: Messier 21 (upper left, below), an open cluster also called The Jewel Box, is gorgeous in just about any non-micro-sized pair of binoculars.

(It's in a rich region of the Milky Way that's most-readily observed from N latitudes in the Summertime.)

Then they even removed "That our Lord and Savior refrained from joking about flatulance;" from that creed they have you recite at church. Resurrection of the body indeed. Fucking conspiracy shit.

Jesus actually ripped some epic fart jokes, but the First Council of Nicaea suppressed them in 325 CE.

I put on what I thought was classic looney tunes on hbo for the kid and spent the whole time being like something is WRONG I feel like I’m in invasion of the body snatchers and then it turns out it was made in the 2020s to resemble the classics and I was so mad

I few years ago I realized that they were padding out the original 30-minute-slot Charlie Brown TV specials with another half hour sorta-kinda, white-noise Charlie Brown product, so they had a full 60 minute slot to sell commercials in.

Haven't checked lately to see if they're still doing that.
