Not a lawyer so I can’t give you a legal argument here but journalists have long been required to be vetted and show credentials before they’re allowed to cover federal agencies from the inside. So far the courts haven’t ruled against it that I am aware of.

Before we retired that's how we always did it. Our local accounting firm knew state and fed tax codes inside and out so we never overpaid.

Our government can't do that. The best we can do imho is to set rules via legislation that require reporters embedded in agencies to adhere to widely accepted journalistic standards. No doubt hammering a law like that out will be complicated but it's absolutely necessary.
