70 powerful Bay Area men were accused of sexual misconduct. What happened next? Since 2010, scores of prominent local men have faced allegations ranging from sexual harassment to rape. Most have returned to the highest echelons of public life.

Harassing has so little long-term effect: "We found that 76% of the men we reviewed are professionally active, 41% are in the same or an elevated role since the allegations were made public"
I'm glad someone is keeping track so industries hold people accountable

Only US Votes Against Women’s Rights Document At UN Commission - Health Policy Watch President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock told the opening of CSW that the backlash against women's rights "feels as though we are forced to

For the first time in decades, consensus broke at the UN Commission on the Status of Women. The United States cast the lone “no” vote on a document aimed at improving justice systems for women and girls worldwide. Misogyny is the official policy of the US under Trump.

‘It’s just madness’: Trump administration to close three-quarters of Forest Service research stations Between funding cuts, facility closures, and the inevitable resignations that will follow, there’s virtually no way for the Forest Service to continue to do research at its current level or quality, w...

My big takeaway from reporting this story is that it's not JUST about the Forest Service.

The closure of these stations threatens to upend a delicate system of mutually beneficial collaboration and resource sharing, and the impacts will ripple out far beyond the Forest Service itself.

There's really no such thing as "breakfast food". You can eat pancakes for dinner. You can have chicken alfredo for breakfast. It doesnt matter at all. It's all a ploy by Big Cereal to make you think you need cheerios for breakfast instead of a turkey sandwich

We were played for absolute fools

The Numbers Don't Lie
Los Angeles County's housing crisis is not a mystery. Fifty-nine percent of renters in the county are cost-burdened, meaning they spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing. And despite years of promises that market-rate development would eventually bring costs down, a 2025 study by Neighborhood Data for Social Change from US's Lusk Center found that of the nearly 152,000 units built between 2018 and 2024, only 10 percent were affordable to lower-income residents.
The math simply does not work. Building market-rate housing in one of the most expensive cities in the country does not produce affordability — it produces profit for developers while the crisis deepens for everyone else. Any candidate who points to market-rate development as the primary solution to LA's housing emergency is either not grappling with the data or not being straight with voters.
Huang understands this. Her platform centers affordable, social, and public housing precisely because she recognizes that the market, left to its own devices, will never prioritize the people who need housing most.

Rather than address these issues, Raman has instead built her mayoral candidacy around easing requirements for housing developers and prioritizing market-rate construction as the path to affordability. That is not a progressive housing policy. It is the conventional wisdom that the development industry has been selling to city governments for decades - and it has not worked.

yeah I’m sorry but Rae Huang is a deeply unserious left-NIMBY who is now attacking Nithya for being too pro-housing.

the grand irony here? despite all of the leftist prose, Rae’s anti-housing policies are fundamentally a continuation of Karen Bass’ NIMBY status quo

Someone is always going to make money on housing. The choice before us is whether public policy should make it hard to build new homes, which lets landlords get rich on housing scarcity, or whether we should let developers profit by building new homes for people to live in, which brings down prices.

There are universities in Iran being bombed, the Weizmann Institute in Israel was bombed, Gaza universities destroyed, and US science and universities under authoritarian attack.

I have friends and colleagues doing neuroscience in or from those places. Across countries, we have much in common.

This is the central trap of American left-populism to me. American left-populists try to abstract away class politics and belies petit-bourgeois class interests.

Not just, to be clear, a mortal wound: imo that's already happened. The actual death. Such that it should no longer be understood to be in force

the top 3 polling candidates for LA mayor are:

-Karen Bass: incompetent, deeply unpopular NIMBY
-Spencer Pratt: washed up reality star reactionary NIMBY
-Nithya Raman: progressive YIMBY who actually cares about making LA better

it’s a no brainer. vote for Nithya

and it's not limited to affordable housing...

market rate development in this country has tanked, and it is not feasible even in places that can support high rents. with wide open zoning.

here in the PNW - it's not a question of zoning. WA eliminated single family zoning.

the problem is the fundamentals of development are so f*cked that nothing pencils.

Zoning laws are locking working families out of the American Dream
Zoning laws are locking working families out of the American Dream YouTube video by MS NOW

zoning *was* pricing out folks in most cities

but most cities have addressed this. the problem is they waited too long so land costs are way too high.

it's now: high interest rates. it's high inequality. it's sh*tty building codes. it's tariffs. it's dwindling labor pools.
