Several of the US Littoral Combat Ships were decommissioned after only 6-7 years, within the last few years.

were still cultural traditions. Maybe for the older generations, they were an acquired taste. I think they were passed down as training for future hard times. The prime example that comes to mind is head cheese. A paté out of otherwise unusable bits of a pig's head is something I don't want to eat.

I'm here because my ancestors ate what they had to to survive. From our future of abundance, we can look back on some of those choices and opt not to put that disgusting thing in our mouths. But I appreciate the ingenuity and determination that let them survive. When I was young, some of these...

The winner in today's (full) Boston Marathon finished in a course record 2:01:51. I've done that course by bicycle a few times, and that took me about 3:30, so yeah, pretty amazing for a runner.

Very nice! I'm happy to admire this as the art it is. If I noticed a few quibbles, would you want them pointed out, or would that make me akin to one of the sea monsters guarding the cave?

Why is it not only possible, but not uncommon that I can buy a new paperback copy of a book, and have it shipped to my house in one day, for several dollars less than the ebook version?!

Warren rallies for Graham Platner in Maine, calling him ‘real fighter’ for sweeping change - The Boston Globe It was the first time Warren has appeared with Platner since her endorsement last month.

What the heck is wrong with @warren.senate.gov? Is she getting dementia? Until about a month ago, she was one of the politicians I most respected. I was disturbed by her endorsement of nazi tattoo guy, and now this shows that she's doubling down.

My day was saved by noticing the cat vomit before I stepped in it with bare feet. I hope Drummer's day greatly improves with her feeling better.

My nordic ancestors were Swedish rather than Norwegian. But for the last few hundred years, my people lived in Canada, which has its own relationship with cold.

Summer heat and humidity is the main counterpoint to that adage. I just imagine my air conditioned house or car to be part of my attire.

There's no bad weather. Just inappropriate clothing choices.

download books from them. I've been wanting to lessen the use of Amazon, so this seems like a nudge to do so. The Apple Books app/system never seemed to work for me. I recently tried the Kobo app/store, and I'm pretty happy with it. I may get by with apps, or I might try their hardware reader.

Most of my recreational reading long ago shifted to ebooks. In the days when phone screens and batteries weren't as good, I got a Kindle eInk reader, though these days, I'm more likely to read via phone or tablet app. Amazon just decided my perfectly functional Kindle will no longer be able to...

To be fair, Lovey and Thurston only planned to be gone for a three hour tour. It's not their fault their condo sat empty for three years, and faced an unfair tax burden as they were trying to reintegrate.

Kids these days!

But seriously, those editors exist to edit the config files to build emacs, where the real work happens.

If it includes boiled down bones, it should be called stock, otherwise broth. If you have a bad reaction, best to check the ingredients, because words don't mean anything when marketeers get involved.

Next you’ll be telling me I should stop shouting “Stock! The world you want is stock,” every time I hear someone say “bone broth.” 😜

The distinction I've always heard/used was that if it was filled with down, it was a duvet, and if it was filled with anything else, it was a comforter.

Once you learn the burrito method, putting a cover on a duvet is a piece of cake (or maybe a bite of burrito).

Boston's season hasn't been starting well. It'll make the late season comeback all the sweeter!

It seems a bit bold to refer to random acts of bellicosity as a strategy, incoherent or not. Strategy would imply some consistency of planning, or expected outcome.

Handing the money back to businesses without ensuring they will pass it along to the consumers that ultimately paid the tariffs seems like a terrible idea.

And no. The answer is no. When I went back to the kitchen, it was all still there, so I wiped it up. At least she explored something new, even if she ultimately rejected it.

A tortie cat takes up all the newly freed space on a desk.

A tortie cat takes up all the newly freed space on a desk.

Need to set up a piece of equipment, and figured it would fit on the end of this desk. So, I cleared the spot for it. Drummer has alternative ideas about the usage of space.

When I was preparing my bagel for breakfast, I apparently dropped a smidge of whitefish paté on the floor. I just found Drummer licking it. Is my little belter kitty finally expanding her culinary horizons beyond kibble?

I'm still salty about Warren endorsing Platner well after his Nazi tattoo, his problematic posts, and his continued use of the R word were well known.

That's bad enough the first time. It's the three follow-up messages, where they claim you still haven't submitted a review, and ask you to reconsider, that really annoy.
