A hotel bill, for accommodation at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin for the nights of March 27th and 28th, 1953. Peter Pears Esq. and Benjamin Britten Esq. are recorded as sharing room 325. The bill also itemises other services: luncheon on the 27th, plus wines, and breakfast on the 28th. Six pounds, eight shillings and fivepence is carried forward from a previous bill (Britten and Pears were on tour and had stayed in the same hotel about a week before). The total of the bill is eight pounds, ten shillings and eightpence.
A bill for eight pounds, two shillings and sixpence, dated March 28th 1953, from Huet Motors in Dublin presented to Benjamin Britten. At the bottom is an Eire twopenny stamp with a signature over it, indicating that the bill has been paid. The works on the car were to overhaul the distributor, check for fumes and fit a new flexible petrol pipe, and to check the wheel alignment and balance the wheels; in addition, there is the purchase of 18 gallons of petrol and a pint of Castrol oil.
For St Patrick's Day, here are some more snippets from Britten and Pears' financial receipts: it's 1953 and they're on tour in Ireland, staying in the Shelbourne in Dublin (where they share a room) and, a leitmotiv of their travels, having car trouble.
