Ever get somewhere and wonder 'How am I the only one here?'
Welcome to Lime Kiln Bay, Montserrat π²πΈ
The workshop was funded by the AHRC supported 'Archives Assemble!' project.

Absolutely amazing experience this afternoon, taking a tour of the Soufrière Hills on the Montserrat Volcano Observatory helicopter. Wow. What a way to experience this geoheritage.
Very excited to be in Montserrat this week, supporting local groups as they consider developing a UNESCO Global Geopark on this amazing volcanic island π²πΈπ
π€ Meet Bradgatia linfordensis
π Bradgatia was first described in 1995 by Helen Boynton and Trevor Ford. The site of that discovery.... Bradgate Park!
π₯ This is one of a number of new animations produced by Martin Lisec, bringing to life our ancient fossils from 560 million years ago.
Join me at the end of the month for a free talk about Geoparks and the benefits this UNESCO status could bring to Leicestershire:
π The theme for Geodiversity Day 2026 is 'Geodiversity On Our Doorstep'.
π Time to get planning your celebrations for October 6th!

π€ Meet Charnia masoni
π Charnia was the first Precambrian fossil described from Charnwood Forest, and one of the oldest animal fossils ever found!

Gabions now becoming my default answer to all geological interpretation requests:
Honored to be co-credited with Martina Stupar, for this year's International Geodiversity Day theme : "Geodiversity On Our Doorstep" π
My current research is all about bringing geodiversity outside of the academe and to the people, and this year's theme is all about that.
π₯³ Today we're announcing the theme for International Geodiversity Day 2026... and 2027 and 2028!

π€ Meet Primocandelabrum aelfwynnia
π First described in 2017, this is one of three species of Primocandelabrum found in Charnwood Forest.
π₯ This is one of a number of new animations produced by Martin Lisec, bringing to life our ancient fossils from 560 million years ago.
"Are you the Jack Matthews who presented Palaeovision?"
Clearly, hosting the pandemic Palaeontological Association meeting is the slow burn way to become famous.

Obligatory pilgrimage to the site of the Miss Phillips Conglomerate.
I am still surprised there isn't statue of Anne Phillips here - there isn't even an interpretation panel. Anne was a geo icon who proved Murchison wrong!

An absolute favourite I regularly return to! πΈ
The few observations that I have made are necessarily imperfect, but I send them, as they afford a method which might lead a naturalist to notice habits otherwise difficult to observe, and so to arrive at conclusions which I in my ignorance of natural history must leave to others. C. V. Bovs
We just don't end papers like this any more. Maybe the world would be better if we did?

Your favourite Ediacaran fossils are now available as cardboard and plaster of paris models, thanks to @charnwoodforest.bsky.social:
unnamed elongate Arboreomorph frond with broad flat disc numerous small branches arise from a central axis at a high angle
reconstruction of an elongated frondose arboreomorph organism with an inferred upright mode of life. Depicted on a hypothetical deep marine seafloor with patchy white microbial communities
coming soon another new Ediacaran taxon from Newfoundland. This one is an #Arboreomorph from the #Ediacaran of the NE Avalon Peninsula discovered and written up with PhD students Pascal Olschewski @simonrosse.bsky.social. The art needs some work to do justice to the fossil but Happy #FossilFriday!
We've reached the point where people don't realise the contradiction of loudly watching a video - without headphones - about the dangers of individualism, on an otherwise silent evening bus.
Geologising complete. Time to return to base.
