THE WONDER ISSUE
Dear
Noisemakers,
There are so many reasons to love this world, including that there's a butterfly that's bigger than your head (page 34), and oceans are filled with water from outer space (page 42), and laughter really is contagious (page 45). And then there's you! You are a wonder too, and I'm so glad you're here. Kazoo's Wonder Issue marks a milestone. We're celebrating 10 years of being in print, which means we ve made 40 issues for readers just like you. I think this is our best one yet. Take all the wonder you find inside and keep if with you wherever you go.

Rose O’Neill, creator of the wildly popular, & lucrative, “Kewpie Dolls,” kept a standing reservation at an NYC restaurant for any artist who needed a meal. “You can’t make art if you’re always hungry,” she said.

What one thing helped you become the artist you are today?
I just spent a lot of time drawing. I even drew during school, which often got me in trouble, but it helped me pay attention.

Why is drawing so important?
Making art is a way of getting your inner thoughts and feelings out into the world.
I'm shy, but when my drawings get attention, it makes me feel happy and like I'm not alone. Sharing our inner experiences is one of the most important things we can do, because it keeps us connected with our tribe: other humans.

What if a picture doesn't turn out how you'd hoped?
When we draw, we're figuring out how to match the image in our head with the image coming out of our hand. When we succeed, it's easy to love our drawings.
When we don't, it can feel disappointing.

But don't get mad. Treat it kindly. Maybe you'll see a way to fix it or turn it into something else. If you look at it like a fun puzzle to solve, then in the long run, it'll make you better at drawing.

Kazoo talked with cartoonist Alison Bechdel for our Drawing Issue.
Here's some of what she said:
What was your favorite thing to draw as a kid?
Doodle bugs-magical, silly people with polka-dotted wings and droopy antennae.
What do you love to draw most now?
People. When I was little, I'd often draw a single person-an astronaut, a cowboy, a surfer-on a piece of paper. My father would say, 'Look at all that white space you left! You should draw some backgrounds!
So, sometimes I did to humor him, but l was just itching to draw another person. It was good practice. Now as a cartoonist, I have to be able to draw all kinds of things.
