Anne Salmond: We're reforming the wrong part of government Coalition Govt ministers insist their reform of regional councils is 'not a power grab' - but all the evidence suggests the opposite, to democracy's detriment

'.. it seems that local and regional government are being set up as a target to distract New Zealanders from their dissatisfaction with the current regime.' - Anne Salmond

Winner of top science prize blames ‘batshit’ Budget for brain drain Dr Samuel Mehr says the Government values science, but their ‘idiotic’ approach to funding it will cost them their best and brightest.

I appear to have spoken to a reporter who took seriously the gravity of NZ's science crisis

does anybody have a newsroom pro subscription so that I can learn what other choice phrases I used on the record?

Really, Andrew Little? Andrew Little has appointed Ray Chung to head an important Wellington City Council committee. We don't think he should be doing that. If you agree, please tell him so. Here's how.

Emily (Emily Writes) and I drafted a letter to Andrew Little about his decision to appoint Ray Chung as chair of the CCO Review & Appointments subcommittee. We think this is unacceptable given his past behaviour. Here's a template for a letter if you agree:

We go way back with @micheleacourt.bsky.social. She's MCd NetHui at least three times and voiced videos for us – so she was our first choice to help us host NetTalks, and we're so pleased she said yes! Christchurch, we'd love you to join us this Friday at 5.30pm.

Two panel cartoon.

First panel: A character is holding a placard 'Defund the Police'. Another character says, "Defund the police!? How is he supposed to carry all that!?!?" There is a blue uniformed police officer carrying a whole pile of rocks labelled, 'Keep the peace', 'Every unexpected crisis', 'Domestic violence', 'Theft', 'Homelessness', 'Prostitution', 'School security', 'Drug possession', 'Gang violence', 'Drug dealers'.

Second panel: The character carrying the 'Defund the Police' placard says, "He's not." and to the amazement of the other character the load of the police officer has been taken up by 'Universal health care', 'Drug treatment programs', 'Mental health services', 'Social workers', 'Education', 'Job placement', 'Affordable housing'. Two large rocks 'Sex work' and 'Pot' are being rolled up into the back of a truck labelled 'Decriminalize & regulate'.

The blue uniformed cop, looking very relieved, is left holding a rock labelled, 'Keep the peace'.

I wish I knew who to credit for this astounding image.

Sorry it took me so long to reply to this, but I needed to get back to my 'big puter'.

I find this image very helpful in explaining the very problem you are describing.

I have no idea how to attribute this wonderful work though.

David Fisher's article about Alex covers a lot more of what his friends tried to do - it was one of his discord friends who alerted the motel to the possibility he had passed - again, this contradicts the parents statements - archive.is/WaouD

This is 18 months into being in government, and you've got a Minister having too many beers and getting his feelings hurt about some flags and being called a dickhead by a Kiwi icon. That's not good! It's very not good!

The apologists are mostly people who haven’t yet realised that ALL art is political. (Either that or they’re co-dickheads.)

It’s quite something to see an expression of culture and characterise it as “political branding”.

‘Bishop told Stuff that he was referring to the “overtly political branding on display.”’
