I usually do that and clip the color layers onto the base layer I made to avoid worrying about coloring inside the lines

If you're set on using the same brush to color things, maybe fill the bits you want to color with a base color first using a flat brush before moving on to your regular brush, that way you dont have to worry about bits of the background showing through?
