STUDY: Despite conventional wisdom that increases in vehicle fuel efficiency results in decreased gasoline consumption, Jevons’ Paradox holds. For every 1 mile per gallon of increased fuel efficiency there’s an associated 1.2 mile increase in vehicle miles travelled.
Better cars = higher emissions.

Excerpt reads: "Prioritize your neighborhood Neighborhoods drive our happiness (or unhappiness) more than we think. When Lina Martinez, director of POLIS, the Center for Wellbeing Studies at Universidad Icesi in Colombia, studied the happiness of households in the city of Cali, she couldn’t find much difference between poorer and richer areas. “Their happiness is pretty much the same,” she said. But that changed when she isolated neighborhood conditions, such as access to transit, health care and parks. “The conditions of the neighborhood affect happiness,” she said. “I can’t link that to the space where [people] live.” That aligns with findings from a 2023 study of the Vancouver metro area: Researchers found no significant differences in well-being between people living in single detached homes, duplexes, townhouses, laneway houses and apartment buildings (basement units smaller than 300 square feet were the only negative exception). What did people say they missed most in their neighborhood? Affordability, proximity to family and friends, and a sense of community. Home design was eighth on the list."
A Washington Post article suggests that, beyond a certain threshold, larger homes don't make people happier. Instead, well-being is correlated with affordable housing in walkable neighborhoods where they feel socially connected.

I’m so sorry this is happening!! Another way to kill public service
It's not just cutting traffic, it’s cleaning the air. A new Cornell study found that in the first six months of NYC's congestion pricing:
💨 Air pollution dropped by 22% in the core Manhattan zone.
🌳 The benefits spread to all five boroughs AND the suburbs!

I’d take heated sidewalks in exchange for a parking structure becoming a data center 🤷🏼♀️

After much deliberation and a grueling interview process, I’m pleased to announce that I’ve accepted a new job and will not need any financial support from my parents to cover the high costs of childcare going forward. #AmericanDream #ThisIsYourCity
Listen.
Thank you, VA legislature, for being one of the first states to require anti-speeding technology in the vehicles of the worst repeat speeders. And to the leaders who's stories and loss fueled these efforts, we see you and we stand with you!

The kid & I took the bus Sat night to see a hockey game. (There isn’t a bus past 8pm on Saturdays-ask us how we know🤦🏼♀️)
It was ~10degrees out. The route got dicey as we got closer to the Sullivan arena. An off-ramp cuts off any path from the north. Over 5K at the game!

In Milwaukee, police will now be able to impound any vehicle driven recklessly.
City Alderman: “It’s a two-ton weapon. We should look at this the same way we look at firearms. Let’s get as many of them off the street as possible.”
An ICE agent, who is being arrested for drunk driving and nearly killing his little kids & others, tries to stop the arrest by racially profiling the officers arresting him. Amazing to watch the courtesy given to him as he is belligerent and uncooperative
Wow! He's toast.

Totally agree- I think sharing with wider audience these hard limitations by FHWA they can put energy into advocating for a change. MUTCD is now required to be updated every 2 years (based on advocates highlighting it had been too long between 2009 update and 2024)
Screenshot of FHWA MUTCD chapter 4 on signals highlighting “post mounted signal faces shall be on far side of the intersection…”
Unfortunately us standards require farside placement for primary signal heads. Agencies *could add supplemental signals near side but they would be extra

Ok, so we can’t use Tylenol in pregnancy anymore…based on pseudoscience.
What’s next - no epidurals?

“In the wake of those shootings, an industry has emerged to try to protect schools — and business is booming. According to research, the school security industry is now worth as much as $4 billion, and it's projected to keep growing.”
