I went to a cootie catcher school as well, but I recognize that the other name, while less fun, is far more accurate.

Oh yeah! Still see them around occasionally. I feel like Hamtramck Drive is usually a good sighting area!
As we spend more and more time on our devices and the tacky glossiness of AI images becomes more prevalent, I am feeling myself drawn even more to texture, imperfections, and the general look of things being unquestionably human-made.

Almost all parts of these illustrations are done with india ink & brush with finer details drawn digitally. Although I have a pretty extensive collection of ps brushes that do an excellent job of mimicking traditional media, there is still a loss of control that can't quite be matched on a computer.

Fall and Winter Pheasants
I've been interested in incorporating more traditional media textures in my digital work. This was inspired by my partner's family's annual fall pheasant hunt. This year there was a huge blizzard on the day of the hunt, so I decided to do a diptych!
gratitude journal: being able to send open chrome tabs from my phone to my laptop. that's a good tech thing.
sure, cats love to try to walk on wet paint/ink, but digital artwork is not immune to their chaos. they also love to walk across my keyboard and disappear toolbars and panels in photoshop that I have to google extensively on how to recover.
but also,
"I can sew clothing"
"I can grow food"
"I can hunt"

life is going to be stressful enough. the last thing we need is chaotic way-finding with inconsistent design hierarchies slowing us down!
if society breaks off into little communes, we can all design our groups' flags... that's helpful, right?
that's the kind of temperature I didn't think was possible 🥶
Another year older, another illustrated self-portrait. This year I wanted to try to recreate the effects of my visual snow syndrome. I often describe it as having a low-opacity multiply layer of TV static over my vision, so... I made a low-opacity multiply layer of static over a drawing.
in art school this method was referred to as "tradigital" and I feel like that was a very of-the-time term/portmanteau
slowly plugging away at this one, which will be a diptych. scanning in ink washes and drawing over them digitally. it's been nice to dip into more traditional work once in a while, even if it's not the entire piece.
a snowy WIP crop-in for our snowy day
I was supposed to see them twice in Detroit and neither show happened. The first time their tour bus broke down. The second time their bassist died. Maybe one day there will be a third time and that one will be the charm.
This was my favorite song when it came out. Still rules.
Shannon Shaw from my favorite band, Shannon and the Clams. Also a great bassist, but her voice is incredible and some of the notes she hits in their ballads just rip my heart out. Some of the most honest lyrics, too.

Dice box: a little personal project I've been working on this month. I've been seeing a lot of East European folk art influence lately, especially in interior decoration. I've really been enjoying looking at it, so I decided to treat myself to a little bit of the aesthetic and dnd it up a bit!
Happy Lunar New Year! 🐍
I was born in the year of the snake. Do NOT tread on me.
Hi, I'm Haley, an illustrator/art director based in Detroit. I'm searching for a more vibrant art community online and I'm looking forward to sharing my work here/on Flashes! Here's a completely photorealistic self-portrait I drew for my birthday last year so you know who you're dealing with.
