I think this thinking also speaks to how vapid people like this dude really are. They think protest is just "go outside & yell w/ signs". Encampments were successful to get (some) material gains because they were strategic and specific. It's not something you can copy-paste to any movement.

Like forgetting the encampments started several months after Oct 23. Other tactics rising in escalation led to that, encampments were just the most flashy and got the most attention. Antiwar movement building is happening rn, it just looks different much like early stages leading to encampments did.
The target is not the same, the points of pressure are different. The tactic of encampment style protest is likely not as effective in this situation bc the targets of them (uni admin) don't have the same agency in making the changes they were asking for. There are other factors different here too.
Couple things I've seen missing discourse on how shit this take is 1) there is mobilization happening now like in October 2023, and 2) that the tactics of encampments is maybe not effective here. Protests on campuses specifically pushed institutional divestment from companies complicit in genocide.
Portland Community College could see it's first strike as soon as March 10! More than 75% of PCCFFAP & PCCFCE members have already signed strike pledges.
0.35% annual raise is unworkable for the faculty, academic professionals, & classified staff that make Portland Community College work!
I will believe this when folks in Minnesota say things genuinely seem different

The moment when ICE fired tear gas at thousands of people in Portland.
saw someone call schumer cowardly and chide him for lacking the backbone to call for ICE to be abolished, & it must once again be pointed out that that is untrue. he is not trying to oppose the republicans and failing, he is on the same team as the republicans, and his enemy is you
There are lots of reasons to compare what is happening now to Nazi Germany and there are also lots of reasons to compare what is happening now to the post-1850 Fugitive Slave Act U.S. and it's *weird* how people respond with interest to the former but total confusion to the latter
the only reason "abolish ICE" is seen as radical is that no one will say it but the far left. if every normie Democrat started saying it tomorrow it would move the overton window so far you'd have to squint to find it. my kingdom for leaders who understand they can shape public opinion.
a very strong & contagious sense of "someone else will take care of this mess" runs rampant throughout US society & prevents people from getting together and collectively asserting agency & self-determination over their lives
Jacob Frey: "To ICE -- get the fuck out of Minneapolis"
I think we need to be able to balance the reactions "this is another expression of 250 years of American imperialism" and "what do you MEAN we kidnapped the president of Venezuela and renditioned him to the US and are now claiming to run the country"
Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
Voted to confirm Marco Rubio 👍
When I hear this, I think of the people who were in the streets in Ferguson in 2014-2015 for 375 days STRAIGHT while the national guard was called up and people were being brutalized by cops in the streets for WEEKS. Complete amnesia.
You can do a lot locally with a dedicated group of 15 to 40 people. Regular people should be thinking at that scale rather than at the scale of thousands.
I get that everyone on Bluesky has seen the CECOT video but my question is how does the scale of its spread compare to what might have happened if it had aired on 60 Minutes?
Scanning the media, the story seems to have already disappeared. Bluesky is a specific audience.
“Folks, what they DONT want is a peaceful permitted march that has proven to not change anything. They DO WANT black bloc & fighting with the police. They don’t want you to be pacified! They want to be directly confronted, yeah! This has historically been the case. I know what I’m talking about!”
We are in the final hours before our strike begins on Oct. 14th at 7am, and we have been getting trained on how to run a picket line and how to share our story with the public. But we will need your support! Click here and sign up for a picket shift: form.jotform.com/251634890806...
the adl was championing the deportation of college students and a federal assault on academia wrapped in a fig leaf of protecting jewish students and the head of the nation's biggest teachers union says that it's important to continue partnering with them. they are not a legitimate civil rights org!
By ratting on Jesse Ventura's unionization efforts, Hulk Hogan denied all of his coworkers, and generations of performers who came after him, insurance and a retirement fund, and in that, shares in responsibility for the early deaths of several other wrestlers.
i'd support the spontaneous mass unplanned protest against authoritarian racism but unfortunately i saw a picture of someone in the crowd doing something i personally think is bad optics so i'll have to sit the whole thing out. shame
More focused on writing than learning in general, but I've found Hjortshoj's From Student to Scholar helpful www.taylorfrancis.com/books/mono/1...
Mother and children in detention camp in front of guards.
We need to fundamentally appreciate those on the streets of LA are there because ICE + the fucking military took family members, neighbors + co-workers - this isn't an abstraction.
What would you do if it happened to you? How would you feel about someone crying more over a Waymo than your child?
Americans, especially white collar Americans, not understanding labor organizing is one of the greatest successes of the Reagan era. People just don’t understand solidarity and say stupid shit like “Fuck that union because I don’t like its president” instead of “join and fight!”
“expect Garber to continue his campaign against all manifestations of Palestine on this campus — along with anything else that challenges the University’s financial and political investment in the status quo.”
