I know there's now a ceasefire, but it doesn't change the fact that our prime minister is comfortable siding with a country run by a madman who just threatened to destroy an entire nation.

Fucking shameful.

Just heard Mark Carney's response being asked if he regrets supporting this war now that Trump openly said he was going to commit genocide. He did not condemn Trump's words or actions.

There's no moral difference between US and Canadian government's positions. We're just more polite about it.

One of the silliest things that's ever happened to me on the internet.

@nicholsuprising.bsky.social reminds us: "There’s a compelling argument to be made that to be a modern Luddite is to be on the right side of history—even if history has not been particularly kind to the Luddites."

"No matter how you feel about poison, its use is growing more widespread and it's important that educators understand how they could integrate it as a tool in the classrooms."

You can replace "AI" with any other demonstrably harmful thing and it's very easy to see why this argument makes no sense.

There was so much talent on this season. It's wild how production completely quashed my enthusiasm by the time we got to the semi-final. Can't tell if the bad decisions are just engagement bait or if Ru has fully lost the plot. Don't care either way. I'm out.

I just caught up on this week's episode of RPDG and honestly, this might be the last episode of this franchise I ever watch. After last week's ridiculous elimination, I don't even care who wins. And RuPaul showing the queens AI slop portraits of themselves was so cringe. Big boomer energy.

That explains a lot.

It's kind of crazy that I had to go to grad school to learn this.

Not only do most people have no idea such records are preserved in archives, but they also assume you need special permission to access them. In some cases you do, but most of the time you can just call and ask for an appointment. An archivist will pull out a bunch of boxes and let you look inside.

It blows people's minds when I tell them that I'm looking at minutes from meetings, notes scribbled on manuscripts, personal diaries, unpublished drafts, etc.

It's always interesting when I tell people (outside of my field) about my research, because what I quickly realize is they have no idea what archives are. Most people assume I'm looking through old newspapers. That's very rarely the case.

After I posted this, a game developer from Montreal whose bio says they "block anybody who uses AI," with whom I never interacted, blocked me.

It drives me crazy when people jump to those kinds of conclusions. It's a conference about resisting AI. We're on the same side, dummy!

Jesus Christ. The NYT is something else.

You want a machine to help you generate ideas for a novel? Put a bunch of words or phrases in a spread sheet and use a random number generator to combine a few of them and see what it inspires. I've done it before. You'll get better results than ChatGPT.

It's not rocket science. AI sucks because of the stolen training data, the exploitative labour practice, the concentration of power, the environmental impacts, etc etc etc. Do we really need to keep listing all the ways it's bad? This is known.

Positioning this as some kind of deep philosophical question is doing us all a huge disservice. It's falling for the hype of AI. I a against using AI not because I believe tech can't be used to create art, but because of the VERY REAL and well documented harms that so-called AI is causing right now.

You have to be deeply unserious to be asking those questions about AI and art. Of course, artists (including writers) have used all kinds of methods for generating ideas before: rolling dice, free association, cut up method, writing prompts, brainstorming, etc. No one is saying you can't use tools.

These are not serious questions, nor are they remotely interesting questions to ask. (I did not click the link and I have no intention of reading the article.)
