sheβs such a star

Today marks one month since Alex Pretti was shot and killed in the street by federal agents. I remember the day well. It was just after the march; it was another frigid early morning. Notably (for me) it was Hockey Day Minnesota.
I hoped idealistically that the Wild, my beloved hometown team, would cancel the game scheduled for that night. I knew they would not. I watched the Timberwolves postpone their evening game. I listened to the Wild broadcast vaguely acknowledge unspecified events across the river in Minneapolis during pregame, watched as they didn't even spare a moment's silence after the murder of one of their neighbors. And I will never forget the words they bungled as they segued from their non-statement: "More importantly, back to hockey."
That's how we got here. Indifference. Avoiding difficult truths because they make the wrong people uncomfortable. Taking calls in locker rooms and laughing at jokes that aren't jokes. The US Men's Hockey Team will visit the White House exactly one month after Alex Pretti's murder. Hockey will do as it always does: address nothing, change nothing. It will wait for everyone to forget as the news cycle changes. People will continue to be maced, abducted, and killed in the streets outside the arenas these men skate on, and none of them will care.
But I'm taking it too seriously, aren't I? Because it's 'just sports,' right?

I'm glued to my phone these days which has the effect you'd probably expect.
The bad news machine keeps churning out bad news which I devour, unable to stop the scroll.
I know it's okay to take a break, to rest my eyes, my brain, my nervous system. I know stepping away β just for a moment β isn't selfish.
But I can't.

People keep asking how I'm doing and the answer always feels too small.
I see constant news on my phone, on TV, in the paper. I see streets I know so well; ones I walked and drove everyday for years. Shops and restaurants I've frequented are now opening their doors as makeshift medic stations, recovery bases, bathrooms and kitchens to people in need.
The Cities are not without fault or prejudice or tension, and they never have been. But they're full of neighbors who take that role seriously. People who hold the door for you when you're half a block away are now holding front lines.
Our neighborhoods have gone through chaos before, but this targeted ICE occupation feels different. I'm perpetually worried in a way I haven't been in a while. I'm trying to keep my head up, knowing we outnumber them. We always will.
