how do i feel about cactuses? very carefully! yessssssss that was great
really? wow! i'd read all his earlier stuff, but his fringe right obsessions had been getting more and more intrusive with every book, and i couldn't make it through the first section of seveneves. that was the last stephenson i read.
whoa cooool
if you're interested in something that very much respects the source material, check out "tales from the loop" on prime. it's fantastic.
i've never been allergic, but it was a tense 30 minutes or so waiting to see if my throat was going to swell shut! (i was fine)
last time i inhaled a bug was spring 2020, which i remember vividly because the bug was a bee and it STUNG ME IN MY THROAT
ahh, simple as that, haha
photo looking out at the ocean from the beach, turned at an angle so we see down the beach a little. it's sunset, and the sky at the horizon is rich orange or salmon, fading to steel blue at the top of the frame. in the distance a long, tall wooden pier extends far out into the smooth, calm sea. the low tide has exposed a fairly wide strip of flat, white sand. the setting sun, out of frame to the right but just above the horizon, casts a pattern of shadows and golden light through the pier down the beach. in the foreground there are some palm trees and grassy dunes seen mostly as dark silhouettes.

ok last one from this trip probably. nothing special here, just a nice scene. i'm mainly posting this to see if bsky is still aggressively crushing higher-resolution photos these days.
so i'm sure i'll never see this one, but i remember reading reviews and maybe even a synopsis on wikipedia (my preferred way of taking in a horror movie) but i don't remember-- i'm curious, what on the poster gives away the plot?
alternate reality is exactly what it felt like!! i've never been so happy to be leaving the beach
photo looking out at the ocean from the beach. it's a grey, cold, stormy day, the waves are high and the blue-green water is choppy. in the lower left a man in a black wetsuit can be seen rising up out of the surf. he's a kite surfer, being pulled by the white, crescent-shaped kite seen in the upper right.

the only person i saw in the water all week
screenshot of the following text: i'd never been to pensacola before, but i was stuck there alone for a week in january. pensacola itself is trumpy as hell, like i guess you'd expect from north florida. remember how you forgot trump renamed the gulf of mexico? they didn't forget in pensacola, they've posted star-spangled, red white & blue-striped signs proudly pointing the way to the "gulf of america" on every corner. but the island of pensacola beach was surreal, disorienting. i got a cheap deal on a hotel room with an ocean view, because it was a dead empty ghost town in midwinter, with an icy wind howling off the gulf. wherever i went, i was the only one there. everything around me screamed that i was in a beach party town, except all the people were missing. all silent, nothing moving. the closer i looked the more it all seemed fake, like a movie set. the coffee & sandwich shop was literally named "cafe bistro." it was next to "paddy o'leary's irish pub." i got a shrimp basket at a place called, no shit, "shrimp basket," which was around the corner from "piazza pizza." these aren't real places, these are fake names that give the audience the impression of a pizza place without having to clear copyright. or maybe it's all just carefully designed to help blind-drunk college republicans on spring break understand where they are. there was also a hooters and a señor frog's. (to be fair, the shrimp basket was excellent. cafe bistro was closed, but above the door a foot-tall banner spanning the storefront made sure The Troops were Thanked regardless. i ate at "the reef" instead, the menu of which, in a magnificent display of creativity, turned out to have not one single item of seafood. the waitress called me y'all out of habit before catching herself.)
don't wanna flood people's feeds:
photo looking out over the ocean at sunset. it's the exact same view as the photo in the post above, but everything is much clearer and the colors are much richer.
for reference, here's the same sunset with my "good" camera... a point-and-shoot from 2012. ok, yeah, this one is vastly better in many ways. but. uh
i took this with my "shitty" camera, a cheap point-and-shoot from 2008 (which i just bought last year lol). i like the dreaminess of it, though. something about the texture of the water reminds me of a sketch or an etching.
photo looking out over the ocean at sunset. the photo is looking south so you can't see the sun, but the sky is fading from pink near the horizon to grey higher up. all you can see is water and sky. it's all very muted. the sea is dark blue.

in my family this would simply mean that the true game is convincing everyone else you're correct
look, those moles have perfectly acceptable cartoon faces. this proves that the beano artist CAN do it, and the usual horrors we're subjected to are a CHOICE. your honor, the prosecution rests, we seek the death penalty.

enraging. i don't care if it means i have to move to some decaying slum out in the suburbs, i'll never have upstairs neighbors again.
thank you! i really appreciate that!
the trailer alone stuck with me for like a week lol
i enjoy your movie reviews! i don't really have anything to say about them because i can't even remember the last time i watched a movie. by the way i watched the TRAILER for smile 2 and the part at the end where she was sitting in a car was enough for me to nope right the fuck out of there.
devastating opening line lol
