I recently dipped my toes into the science fiction and fantasy book discourse on Facebook, and I find I have things to say about the "Golden Age" of science fiction. By which I do not mean being twelve. Stick that in your back pocket, though, as it's really useful for understanding some people.

Well said, I agree with every word. I'm also in my 60s, like you I read all those classics when I was a kid. Those authors are not on my list of recs for young people today.
Resharing with alt text because this really deserves alt text
Wholeheartedly agree. Teenagers are wonderful to talk to. How sad that some people are so fearful of being thought predators that they refuse to socialize.
I don’t really know what I expect in posting this, but maybe some people see it and can learn from it.
I’ll call it “lessons from an unwilling immigration attorney.”

I implore you to hit up CVS and get your flu shot. Please don’t game it with whatever else you heard. It’s real serious and we don’t gave any public health allies in the government now.
I've got to reread it. He has a new book coming out.
I have felt for quite a while that at least a part of anti-migrant, anti-refugee behaviour from successive governments is pulling the drawbridge up ahead of an increase in climate-caused refugee movement.
And you know what? It's not gonna save us, lads
So much nope. I'm going to have the heebie-jeebies for hours.
Ugh, sorry to hear that - although I think we're all less fond of FB than we used to be.
Yeah Cambodian takeout was our post-protest treat!
notice the general mood of the timeline? how everyone is in a good mood and there’s a lot less misery and dooming? how there’s a lot of “we’re going to beat these assholes”?
anyway that’s why these events are important
And according to Wikipedia they have been using "flapjack" for centuries and it always meant an oatcake kind of thing. So I guess we here in the US are the weird ones.
We had the same confusion. When Paul first said the word, I thought, wow, pancakes are so easy to make there must be some added requirement that makes this super interesting! And then it was... a bar cookie like a granola bar.
This one's maybe a little on the ling side, but trust me, it's worth it. I've cried reading it multiple times.

Today's #WeAreAllDC protest in downtown Washington, D.C. demanding an immediate withdrawal of federal troops from the District and an end to the federalization of the local police department.
I remember those!
My sister lives in a house that was used for filming that show (rental) and she dreads being discovered. Her last house was used for One Tree Hill and groupies came by constantly.
We were literally sitting down to rewatch Apollo 13 when I saw this.
i think it is hard for some people to really their heads around the reality that kennedy is staunchly anti-vaccine and thinks that people should suffer through disease and that those who die deserved it and that those who survive are a better order of human being
one of the single best deals in streaming. i've been paying for PBS Passport for years. it rules
Celtic Mythology with Professor Patrick O'Neill at UNC-CH. Took it with a bunch of friends. The grad students in the class were a little bewildered at this invasion of undergrads. Fun class and so interesting!
I've done that before myself. Sometimes a second look is all it takes. I loved that book!
With Tom Lehrer's passing, I suppose this is a moment to share the story of the prank he played on the National Security Agency, and how it went undiscovered for nearly 60 years.
I'm not a South Park fan but I have to admire their no holds barred attitude on this one.
