A.I. Is Writing Fiction. Publishers Are Unprepared.

📚 Book publishing has few safeguards in place to prevent the unwitting publication of a novel heavily generated by artificial intelligence

Against hazy gray sky, a small figure sits in profile with arms resting on upraised knees. His high perch of smooth curling wood snakes and branches beneath him dividing into thinner tendrils of swampy roots that extend off the bottom of the panel. A pale yellow sun—interrupted by implied clouds in an atmospheric effect—settles to the right of the twisting wooden arch.

TANGLEWOOD (2016)
Oil on Canvas - 10” x 8”

Even though this leftover has a Hobbit in it, it’s not related to any story. It’s just what I felt like painting.

The oils left on my palette were from a session spent trying to visualize the Witchwood trees for a Tad Williams’ Osten Ard novel. 1/3

Two large prints of the cover art from the first and second book of the series Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn by Tad Williams. They are each more than three feet across. More description in the close ups of the individual prints.

The cover art by Michael Whelan of "The Dragonbone Chair" by Tad Williams.
The frame is dark ribbed wood and the matting is a wintry grey-blue.
The artwork is a single piece but designed such that the left and right look good by themselves as the left was the back cover of the book and the right was the front cover.
On the right, teenage Simon is stepping out of ruins that still show much of their former glory. He's holding a wounded friend who is smaller but somewhat older looking.
On the left a wolf runs through the ruins.
The print is signed in the lower right.

Sigh. It appears to be at the end of its option, & tho' we hear noise sometimes from erstwhile producers popping up & saying it's happening, I suspect it isn't. O well. I gotta say, both of us are ambivalent & neither of us want fame, so there's that. Money would be nice but we don't need #blessings

Obviously I knew that Tad Williams was an amazing writer. He's the guy who got me into fantasy when I was a kid. Memory, Sorrow and Thorn is a masterpiece.

But I'm reading his hard-boiled detective novel and it is so fucking clever. Flawless phrase after flawless phrase. I am in awe.

I'm reading Tad Williams' The Last King of Osten Ard series, which he's writing roughly 30 years after his famous Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series. The original books are great, fairly luminous 1980s epic fantasy with great writing. The new ones are way darker and complex and I'm also enjoying them.

Tad Williams’ Stone of Farewell book cover.

Tad Williams’ Stone of Farewell book cover.

For now, as I linger in indecision over which Star Wars book will be my next companion, I wander deeper into the realm of Osten Ard. The trilogy unfolds like a vast and intricate tapestry, its pages demanding patience, yet gifting the reader with quiet, profound rewards.

Tad Williams sometimes drops small comments on posts or in messages that make me feel stronger and it means the world.

And yes, I've told him.
