Just heard that netCDF viewer #ncview by David W. Pierce is no longer available from source b/c California Assembly bill about age verification. This might likely affect bsd/linux ports at version updates. Not great. 😶

📐🎉 150 years of Geodesy in Bonn!
This year, the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformation at the @unibonn.bsky.social celebrates its 150th anniversary.
🗓 Tue 21.04.26 | 17:00 CET
📍 Nußallee 17, Bonn
Registration: www.igg.uni-bonn.de/de/anmeldung

Very convenient data, esp. if you otherwise have none. We tested the data extensively vs terrestrial water budgets and even against data from the @esaearth.esa.int CCI sea level budget. I might give it a try also as GRACE 'gap filler'
Hundreds of butterflies made out of used wrapping paper placed all over glass room dividers
🦋PhD work "Multiannual Reconstruction of the Butterfly Effect" 😉
We observe a clear trend in opacity, which might be an early indicator for the human impact on kitchen climate.
Formed over 3yrs during lunch times +colleague with hunger for Marzipan (wasn't me I swear!).
Delivering on its mission!
Three months into its life in space, @esa.int ’s HydroGNSS is already hard at work. The mission tracks Earth’s water cycle by analysing navigation signals reflected off the planet’s surface.
Curious to see some examples?

QGIS users: ATTENTION!
We now have a convenient #QGIS plugin to integrate the latest version of the Scientific colour maps directly into the style manager: plugins.qgis.org/plugins/scie...
Shout-out and big thanks to Silvain Théry. ⭐️
Happy mapping, everyone! #UseBatlow 🐡
While it is only a 1st look into what can be done /w the reconstruction, it's interesting how one can already see the water cycle change, e.g. /w increased precip in the Niger region, or a possible signature of deforestation in the Amazon that leads to more runoff and less evaporation. 4/n
As a use case, we derived monthly evaporation fluxes 1984–2020 for a selection of river catchments across the globe via water budgets. That's basically: subtract TWS change, precipitation & river discharge from each other, the rest is evaporative losses. Data: doi.org/10.5281/zeno... 3/n
TWS data are freely accessible through @crc1502-detect.bsky.social Geonetwork data servers and on zenodo: doi.org/10.5281/zeno...

GRACE-like reconstruction of terrestrial water storage, starting from the 1980ies(!).

Max TLE number for regular objects is 69999. ≥70k is for placeholder/analyses. In Feb26 we have already passed 67999. At the current rate of launches and insertion, this limit will be reached THIS SUMMER. See @tskelso.bsky.social 's recent posts if you haven't already, and be prepared 🌐🚀🛰️
The Two Line Element (TLE) format, which has been used to describe orbits of unique satellite objects for decades, is running out of available numbers within its standard. It appears many users are still not aware or have not switched to alternatives. (me too tbh since I'm not running op. services)
One of the lowest operating Earth observation sats was the @esaearth.esa.int GOCE gravimetry mission 2009–2013 ~ in the 250/285 km range and it constantly had to compensate for drag with its ion thrusters (designed for this purpose). Gives you sort of an idea how soon..
If you write about the messy reality behind "free" internet services: we're seeing #OpenStreetMap hammered by scrapers hiding behind residential proxy/embedded-SDK networks. We're a volunteer-run service and the costs are real. We'd love to talk to a journalist about what we're seeing + how […]

More than 200,000 Danish citizens have signed a petition to buy California as a response to Trump’s attempt to take Greenland.
They say they will provide Californians with “rule of law, universal health care, fact-based politics, and a lifetime supply of Danish pastries.”
This call is open to all scientists, regardless of nationality or institutional affiliation, who are actively engaged in research in any of the following fields: Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Planetary Science, or Earth Sciences.

The European Space Agency has cancelled a call to procure commercial cargo services to the ISS, citing “programmatic adjustments.”

I find it rather assimilating 🤡
A year and a half ago, 2024-06-06, we went over Catalog Number 59999. Yesterday, we passed 66999, meaning we have less than 3,000 catalog numbers left. At the rate for the last 1,000 (55 days), we have 165 days left or until 2026-05-24. Time is quickly running out to prepare.
"Ravens that refuse to sing", "Black Crows", "Birds flying high, You know how..." (and of course the protagonists from the BBC 2008 film trailer Miracles of Evolution). Assumed true Spheniscidae excluded from competition, otherwise poll weren't necessary.
We wish you well, fellow Sentinel! With a gentle push, #Ariane6 has released the Copernicus Sentinel-1D satellite to orbit where it will begin its amazing life of scientific discoveries. Keep in touch!

🛰️ Check out this new publication from our members @makankaregar.bsky.social and @funwithgps.bsky.social on GNSS hydrology, integration between GNSS hydrogeodesy and GNSS remote sensing. It focuses on three GNSS capabilities: reflection, positioning and transmission.
