We know many fish and amphibians can regenerate the heart. How about reptiles? A landmark paper from @vickaryouslab.bsky.social to fill this gap. Glad to be a part of this study. @isrbio.bsky.social @evodevopanam.bsky.social @socdevbio.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Salamanders harbor a hypersensitive mTOR, thought to enable their remarkable limb regeneration. But do you need a special mTOR to regrow appendages?
In Polypterus, we find that a canonical mTOR pathway supports full appendage regeneration.

Late Cretaceous bichirs from Madagascar provide the first documentation of Polypteriformes (Actinopterygii, Cladistia) in Eastern Gondwana Fossil polypterid elements have been recovered from the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) Maevarano Formation of Madagascar. These elements document th…

Polypterids (bichirs + ropefish) are the sister lineage of all other living ray-finned fishes. Restricted to Africa today, fragmentary fossils show they inhabited South America until at least the Paleocene. Now Late Cretaceous finds add Madagascar to the list: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Regeneration of fins and limbs relies on a shared cellular playbook The findings strengthen the case that regeneration is an old trait, offering insights into how complex tissues rebuild themselves.
