Benchmarking nine vegetation demographic models: what works, what doesn’t, what’s next...
@annemarie-es.bsky.social
@george.hurtt.bsky.social
How can we explore the future of the world's forests? Understanding the demography of their trees is key. In We took the new gen of global demographic vegetation models and held their roots to the observations. Thanks @annemarie-es.bsky.social for leading! nph.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
The animation stops in year 2100 and the dot representing present-day (already far outside the domain of the past) is highlighted with a black dot behind the yellow dot.
Code is here: github.com/geco-bern/in...
We're heading into uncharted terrain - far outside the range of past variations of the Earth system and at a rate (color of points) far beyond change rates in the past 800,000 year.
In developing a re-usable workflow for my teaching in Applied Geodata Science, I re-implemented the creation of this animation:
The dance of global mean temperature and atmospheric CO2 reconstructions from ice core data, and (seamlessly extending) Earth system model simulations for the future.
Incredible ice loss measured again at #Konkordiaplatz on the #Aletsch #Glacier, home to the thickest ice in the #Alps (still about 800 m!). Yesterday’s survey revealed another –4.6 m of ice gone in just one year. :(

📢Check out our blog on why modelling plant nutrient strategies is the key to predicting the land carbon sink. @trevorkeenan.bsky.social @stineb.bsky.social Trevor Cambron.

Not just Americans that suffer this time. Quite direct consequences for example for exporting technology companies around where I live (Biel, Switzerland). They will eventually have to reduce workforce bc tariffs of 39%
Thanks to everyone who has been part of my group for Geocomputation and Earth Observation (geco-group.org) - your efforts were the foundation for making this happen.
PS: And thanks to my partner for sharing a life with intense jobs ;-)
I'm super happy that the University of Bern has given me the trust and is expecting to keep me on board until the end of days, a.k.a. to give me tenure.
I'm grateful for having the privilege to study and teach what is close to my heart - climate impacts on ecosystems and the global carbon cycle.
💧🌿How does soil moisture shape the land carbon sink? Catch up on highlights from our latest science seminar for new research on plant water stress, ET and GPP under drought conditions. #soilmoisture #evapotranspiration #carboncycle @stineb.bsky.social

How does photosynthesis respond to changing temperatures?
In the paper led by Pascal Schneider, we show that the thermal acclimation of photosynthesis can be modelled without making assumptions about plant functional types - ready for adoption in ESMs

Together with Beni Stocker @stineb.bsky.social we have an open postdoc position (2yr with possibility of extension) in coupled Earth system modelling with a focus on dynamic global vegetation modelling.

#DeadTreeDetective Last year it was Western Australia, this year South Australia is seeing canopy collapse from drought. If you're in SA, please help us figure out how widespread it is!
@1t.org any thoughts on this?
5. A big part of the problem, ironically, is that natural regen is much cheaper/free, so there's less money to be made from it. There's an industrial lobby which profits from planting grim rows of trees in plastic tubes. There is no industrial lobby profiting from letting nature do its thing.
I'm teaching this tutorial on global wetland and peatland modelling at a PhD course in Copenhagen, organised by Guy Schurgers. I hope it's useful also for other interested people...

Looking very much forward to the upcoming symposium on past knowledge and future directions in climate and environmental physics, and celebrating the huge scientific contributions of Fortunat Joos, Markus Leuenberger anf Thomas Stocker
Only about two weeks left to apply to the open postdoc position.
Get in touch with @stineb.bsky.social or myself, if you are interested.
Together with @fpoeppelmeier.bsky.social, we have an open 2-year postdoc position on Next Generation Bern Earth System Model at University of Bern and the Oeschger Centre.

Try it out, have fun, and give us feedback. Issues can be raised on GitHub: github.com/geco-bern/rs....
It implements:
- P-model for time series simulations of photosynthesis and its acclimation to the environment.
- BiomeE(P), a vegetation demography model (optionally with P-model photosynthesis )
