They subsequently "fixed" that by inserting a character creator for Nioh 2... and of course lost all the narrative benefits of having an actual protagonist (the thing that made Nioh 1 so interesting) rather than a random avatar. But everyone could identify with their character then or something.
There was an interesting conversation I had off the record with someone who worked on the Nioh series that one of the things they were very surprised about was how strongly Americans complained that in Nioh 1 you played as a white male. Never mind that he was a real historical figure.
Not to turn the grifting right into an actual discussion, but to your point, there is a cultural difference here. Americans strongly prefer to identify with characters that look like them, but the Japanese do connect with characters that look different to them - anime's filled with white characters.
