So cool to have been a part of this endeavor and glad the paper is finally out!

I decided to do something new for my final Research Methods for Public Policy class of the quarter. Many of my students are considering political work or grad school, so I walked them through pros and cons of each path based on my own experiences in 3 very different careers.
Here is a thread @ our new book Catching Fire in the News by @boydstun.bsky.social, me, @dallascard.bsky.social, and @nlpnoah.bsky.social.
We ask: Why do some events become media storms while others, similar in many ways, don't?

Love that this article keeps popping up in my feed. It's motivating to finish the final stretch of the study with @alicemalmberg.bsky.social, where we show significantly positive effects of the @marchforourlives.bsky.social Road to Change yearlong protest in 2018 and GOTV for youth. #SPSA
That’s a wrap on my first quarter as an instructor of record for methods, one of the hardest but most rewarding things I’ve done in my PhD.
I’m so proud of my 43 undergraduates who conducted original, policy-oriented research projects and presented today to CA policy leaders and community members.
It was quite a story!! Other than that I had a great solo Interrail experience though!
You make it look so easy! Did Zagreb to Vienna last month and spent a terrifying 20 minutes locked in a train station bathroom in rural Slovenia!
Can LLM-based 'silicon samples' accurately reflect human decisionmaking in conjoint tasks? The short answer is "not really" -- but there's more to the story.
I'll be presenting my paper on synthetic sampling in conjoint experiments tomorrow at 10! #APSA2025
Thank you!! I’ll check them out.
I am on the academic job market this fall! I study how Americans perceive and react to policy extremism, experimental design, & machine learning/AI.

I’m so excited to discuss how perceptions of extremist abortion laws shape Americans’ relocation preferences at 3pm ET tomorrow!
You can read my working paper here: drive.google.com/file/d/1erIp...
Come hang out with me on February 5 to talk about how Americans’ perceptions of extremist policies shape where they choose to live!
This is everything
Christmas dinner with people I just met:
Them: What do you do?
Me: I’m in grad school
Them: For what?
Me: To become a professor
Them: What kind of professor?
Me: A social scientist
Them: What?
Me: *braces for impact* I study political science
Them: WELL HOW ABOUT THAT ELECTION
Outside of work I enjoy traveling, live music, Formula 1, and exploring new spots in Sacramento, where currently I’m lucky enough to call home. I’m still on the other app but will do my best to crosspost here going forward. :)
My main work asks if Americans actually consider state-level extremist policies to an equal or greater extent than non political factors such as cost of living when deciding where to move. I find experimental & observational evidence that they do, especially in states with abortion bans post-Dobbs.
It looks like I’ve gained some followers on here, so a quick reintroduction: I’m a political science Ph.D. candidate at UC Davis. I study how Americans perceive and respond to extremist state policies, as well as AI integration in survey methods.

The associate dean, Christian T. Lundblad, told Chavis that the review had begun prior to April 22—using a camera in Chavis’s classroom. “We recorded and reviewed several of your class sessions on April 8th, 10th, 15th and 17th using the existing Panopto camera in the classroom,” Lundblad wrote. (The company says its name derives from panoptic, defined by Merriam-Webster as “being or presenting a comprehensive or panoramic view,” though others have noted its ominous similarity to a panopticon, an 18th-century design for a prison where guards could constantly surveil the inmates.)
UNC is secretly recording classes without informing professors and using the footage in formal reviews of their performance.

Clearly I am among my people here! Thank you!
Quick litmus test to check if you drink too much caffeine: mention to coworkers that you’ve heard of a new drink called a “Black Widow” (4 shots of espresso in a cup of black coffee). If they all yell “NO!” at the same time, you may have a problem.
Polisky - anyone have ideas for organizations/grants that might fund a democracy/backsliding happy hour at APSA? We have proof of concept from MPSA that there is interest in this, and I’d love to be able to actually buy people’s drinks next time.
