The salutation/visitation - an excellent 15th century wall painting depicting Elizabeth, pregnant with John the Baptist and Mary, pregnant with Jesus. Apparently quite rare - and it’s amazing how well it’s survived! 🤩

Happy birthday!
Photograph showing the poster for the archaeosexism exhibition. A blue background with the exhibition title in the top left corner. The rght and centre of the poster is filled with a line drawing of black and yellow lines with a white infill of a woman, side on, holding her hand up in which she hold a trowel. Across the bottom of the poster are the logos of the organisations supporting the exhibition.
Photograph of 5 posters from the exhibition on display. Each poster has a different example of sexism illustrated. The sides of each poster are covered in orange and green post it notes, placed by delegates if they have witnessed or expreinced that type of behavior in an arhaeological setting.
3 years ago this week I took the #Archaeosexism exhibition to the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists #CIfA conference. Three days of observing & listening to people recounting their expereinces of workplace #sexism & engaging with those rarely 'in the room' for these type of events.
The front full length view of a long sleeved 1840s dress in deep pink silk. It has a skirt pleated into the waistband and some gathered pleats along the sleeve but is otherwise plain
A similar view of the deep pink silk 1840s gown but this time worn with a matching plain shoulder cape
A partial view of the pink 1840s pink silk gown which shows the detail of the pleating at the skirt and the inverted pleating running along the outside of the upper arm
I like the strict unfussiness of this #1840s rose pink silk gown. It lets the construction do all of the talking, drawing the eye to the sharp pleats, the neat seams and regimented folds. And the matching cape! @mdhistory.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
Honey! New sheep genomes just dropped!

Can we talk about how harassment and borderline stalking of trans women by gender critical activists has become entirely normalised?
Why can’t a trans woman do a bloody Parkrun without having her privacy violated and her data amassed on a website?!

Do you like sheep? Do you like isotopes? Then here’s a little treat for you:

It's so impossible to drag under-18s away from the TV nowadays.

A dog poses on a table. He's surrounded by a tailor's measuring tape.
Every time this tailor posts a photo of their workspace, it looks like their dog is a tailor and he's showing off the garments he made.

Me, lecturing at the front: "The Black Plague would end up killing as much as 50% of Europe's population. And do you know what else is a plague? Having all your browser activity tracked by your employer - use promo code YERSINIA..." (a single sob escapes) "...to get that 50% off NordVPN today!"
Channeling this classic XKCD comic (with apologies to Randall Munroe for my edits here) as I review my chapter comments that read "include a map, no one but you knows where these sites are"

Two terracotta tiles with white slip design. The design of the two adjacent tiles forms half of a circle. Half a small circle in the centre is surrounded by top half of an 8 pointed star form. Between the points of the stars can be seen 4 small 5 petal flowers. On the visible corners of each tile, at the top left and right are fleur de lis designs. Eltham Palace would have been in countryside during its royal habitation, but now in greater London south of Greenwich / Woolwich. Much later in 20th C converted by Courtaulds to stylish Art Deco residence.

From decorative pavement of 1290s Great Hall, the earliest building at Eltham Palace, built for Bishop Bek of Durham.
Bek presented Eltham to Edward II in 1305, and it remained a royal residence, enhanced, altered and used by monarchs through to Charles I. Henry VIII grew up here.

”Water horse” is so good!
Don't despair if you don't speak Dutch: the research on the 'Dane saga' itself was published in English in Open Access (🔓), along with the first English translation of this brilliant work of premodern imagination 📖

The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery We are delighted to announce that The Friends of The Potteries Museums & Art Gallery, helped by generous public donations, have raised £10,000 towards the acquisition Ellastone Dress Fastener. Thank you everyone who has donated towards this fantastic milestone. We are now closing this strand of the funding campaign.
Some great news - thank you to everyone who contributed their hard earned cash!
(Just a reminder that had the finder/ landowner donated the dress fastener, it would have cost £0 instead of £150,000...)

Edible Books!
I don't have any real books to share today, so here is the glorious lineup of faux-folios from April 1! Most photos were by Ben Greer, and featured on @newberrylibrary.bsky.social instagram. First up, The Poison Princess, by Conservation, a Swedish Princess cake with a dire twist! 1/?
