First-Order Dilemmas in Second-Order Elections: Social Democrats and Immigration Policies in 2024 European Parliament Elections European Consortium for Political Research

Off to Thessaloniki this August to present at the @ecpr.bsky.social General Conference. I am pretty elated and looking forward to participating!

I’m hearing a lot of people repeating the line that social democrats are not losing votes to the far right, so that invalidates the thesis that social democrats have lost touch with the working class and should address issues like migration. But this is missing the point

I think he is talking about CDU here, not AfD. I think. Not sure even if he knows. Probably saw Conservative and thought welp right-wing.

Somebody should make a joke about that high price is just market economics, a question of supply and demand and he shouldn't really complain but that person probably isn't me.

Austria’s ‘firewall’ against the far right collapsed. Could the unthinkable happen in Germany too? | John Kampfner Events in Vienna are forcing Germany’s bickering mainstream parties to rally together. But the AfD could yet outflank the centre

Weird take. This is not the first time the Austrian far right is in coalition talks to form a government. They also governed federally with ÖVP twice before, albeit as junior partners.
Meanwhile, FPÖ currently also governs in several regional state coalitions.

That 'firewall' collapsed decades ago.

I don't mean to promote my stuff shamelessly, but Jusos is referred to as a 'stopping force' in this, so it's definitely on point :) Even if party actors don't protest publicly, lack of support still undermines the effort. They must buy the shift first, and then the electorate can get on board.

I'd humbly add that 'how' they shift and the politicians' agency also matter. A lot of convincing and ideological 'reconstruction' was involved in the Danish case. If the shift is perceived as "we are doing this because we need votes," it backfires, first within the party and then with the voters.

Incredibly interesting and insightful article! I'd venture to say that a similar trajectory awaits Socialdemokratiet in the future.

MacWhisper is pretty amazing.

No Scholz is an admission of failure/responsibility. If Pistorius, why run a (potentially) winning candidate in a race that they will most likely lose? And he would need to "shift" to the right on many issues even to have a chance, which would upset the party base - why add fuel to the fire?

The same goes for the Danish-German border, where Denmark has long imposed border checks. Basically, experts and data, including the police union, showed that checks were ineffective, a waste of personnel, time, and effort, and mostly worked as symbolic/gesture policies.

May I suggest myself for the list? A considerable part of my work is about German social democrats.

Could you add me as well please? My research focuses quite a lot on intra-party dynamics :)

Only tags at the moment but I am planning to extend it to (official) party and politician accounts as it gets more widespread. Any suggestions?

A month ago, PiS "won the elections" in Poland with no realistic possibility of forming a government. For my research, I interviewed a (Socialdemokratiet) politician who said, "We won the battle but lost the war" about 2015. It is definitely not enough. Makes good headlines though...
