Just gave my last talk of the year!

2025 was quite packed, I gave talks about:
- the age-period-cohort problem
- making rigorous causal inference more mainstream
- mediation analysis
- marginaleffects
- causal graphs (x10)

If you're curious, check out my slides here: juliarohrer.com/resources/

Hey now Australian archaeology has theory:
1. Dig hole, get rocks and dates (optional, only if old rocks)
2. ***Immense handwaving and ad hoc explanation for 20 pages***
3. 'we conclude that our results are due to some combination of culture/population/environment, we need more data please fund'

More evidence that "geological timescale" is a useless descriptor.

Image shows a archaeological figure showing the distribution of estimated use lives of basin hollows by technological stage. The graph is almost impossible to read as it has three dimensions (frequency, estimated use life, stage). It displays each stage as a different ribbon that looks like folded cardboard where foreground stages obscure background stages. The use of a line/ribbon graph is incorrect as the data comes from counts of individual items. A 2D histogram with the stage counts indicated by differing color or symbology would be much clearer and simpler.

Would accept "Has code" at this point, 90% of the papers that start with "we present a new computational method for.." really mean they present some pretty pictures, graphs and ignored emails.

My small contribution to these great #archaeology starter packs is one collecting all the archaeologists (and closely aligned fields) working and/or based in Australia. Please let me know if I’ve missed anyone.
