TLDR: If you are taking a GLP-1 for diabetes or weight loss, there is no reason to be alarmed just yet. Let’s just wait on the report. Take scientific journalism with a grain of salt; it’s (sadly) not accurate.

I don’t want to underplay this, but a high proportion of people who ask for weight loss medication also have some degree of body dysmorphia. The press *does* have a tendency to sensationalize scientific reporting, and sometimes a leading story is completely false. (Like the Diet Coke cancer thing.)

While this is alarming, I would like to point out we currently don’t know anything about these deaths, like whether they were taking the med for diabetes or weight loss, or if they had comorbidities like prior suicidality, body dysmorphia, or a major life event. These will likely be investigated.

An NBC article reports that the FDA has issued a citation to Novo Nordisk, the developer of semaglutide (the drug inside Ozempic and Wegovy), citing 3 deaths by suicide and giving the company 2 weeks to investigate the deaths and issue a report.

First of all, I would like to point out that this drug class was developed as a treatment for type 2 diabetes, NOT weight loss. Weight loss was a secondary indication that was approved for certain products, years after the drugs were on the market.

I’m seeing a lot of headlines today talking about GLP-1 drugs (such as Ozempic/Wegovy) including a BBC article titled “We’re finally learning the true side-effects of weight-loss drugs.” Thread.

I just gave her some pamphlets for support groups, advised her to keep thinking about the rehab thing, let her know her situation is a little worse than a few months ago, and talked to the people on the hospital team about it… I asked them to bring up rehab some more before she gets discharged.

Another option is comfort care. We can try to qualify for hospice, get pain under control, and stop trying to work so hard to get a liver transplant. … The patient doesn’t want that either.
