Meta just paid the lowest effective federal tax rate in its history.
Thanks to tax breaks and loopholes, it avoided $13.7B in 2025 federal income taxes.
But now it's planning to lay off 10% of its global workforce (8,000 people) by May 20 โ with more job cuts later this year.
Trickle down hoax.
Re: absence of a husband: he was not at home on census day is the most likely reason. I've seen similar examples where someone was simply staying with a relative on census day.
Seems like an age ago that Grahame was telling me how Danny used to jam with Sam and Dan on Friday nights.
My son Danny is competing for the grand prize in the John Lennon Songwriting competition in the category โFolkโ.

I think I could be in Portugal right now- too cold here despite spring-like episodes.
@stuartcantrill.com sounds like something you'd be interested in - if it were Comtรฉ that is.
I like the competing financial interests declaration.
(pay wall = providing your email address, so payment in another sense)
Here's a good write up from last month that is not behind a pay wall.

Ironically, in those disadvantaged areas of the country there are few or even none of the traditional working class job opportunities of the past.
And an important factor is the large regional disparities in investment and opportunities, which arose starting from Thatcher era policies, in which industries have been off-shored or fallen by the wayside and not replaced with anything meaningful.
I would disagree, perhaps even strongly, that the class system it reflects in the UK has gone.

Watt is not your favourite unit?
Driven through Stevenage twice in the last six months. Far fewer flags on lampposts in late January compared to September.

I guess it was Trump who put the gold script sign by the Oval Office, as he needs reminding daily where he is.
My son is studying in Sheffield these days so I could have, but he's coming home this afternoon for a couple of days for a belated Easter parental visit.
Last thing I heard was that they couldn't agree if they would have a single leader or some sort of politburo set up.
See my follow up post...
I was/am always in favour of setting aside a whole day per week for labs. Half-day /3 h sessions just don't allow (all) students to work at a pace they are comfortable with to actually learn lab skills and time management, instead of prioritizing 'getting it done" in a short period of time.
As you may remember Michael, if a student was at risk of overrunning Carol K. in the ITL used to turn the lights off like a pub landlady calling last orders. There was no overrunning allowed!
Could be "back to back". IIRC I had 9.15 am lectures and labs started at 10. Flip that and you could have a lecture timetabled at the end of the day/session which had a lab.
Hi from afar.....
