Yup! Which is why I loved seeing the ion torp run in particular in R1: it mimicked the kind of tactics you had to use in XWA to avoid your missiles being shot down. You had to get in close before release.

Also makes the fighter screen way more valuable than trying to chase down distant attackers

Which was always my theory why the films never showed torpedo runs like in the books: because jamming and point defense would have made those types of attacks impossible.

Stackpole portrayed them as an “I win button,” even joining Trench Run Disease as a sign of capital ships’ unique vulnerability to torpedo attacks. This was probably born out of the early games’ capships not being able to shoot down missiles, something solved by XWA implementing point defense guns
