driving home tonight one of the overpasses had a giant “Love Earth Like Trump Loves Ivanka” on it, and can we just… stop inserting him into things? he does that plenty as is, he does not need our assistance, and earth day does not need to be tainted by his presence.

PANEL 1: SHELDON, a ten-year old boy with large glasses, motions to the title of the comic.
SHELDON: If you’re a sci-fi fan, you’ve noticed it:
TITLE: STAR TREK ships always beet NOSE-TO-NOSE

PANEL 2: One Starfleet ship faces right, level to our eye; while another faces downward. But they’re in space so “level” is relative.
NARRATIVE: This is because it looks IMMENSELY STUPID to show how starships would ACTUALLY meet in 3-D space.
SHIP 1: Greetings! This is the Starship Enter—
SHIP 2: DURRRP.

PANEL 3: Starfleet ship continues to face right and level, ship 2 is now facing to the right and upside down and sideways.
NARRATION: Your mind just wouldn’t process it right.
SHIP 1: Two to beam over.
SHIP 2: Wait wait wait! All our cups are plates are sliding to the back of the ship!

PANEL 4: The starlet ship continues to face right and level, now there are 3 Klingon ships facing all different directions and orientations.
NARRATION: And it’s even dopier if there’s a bunch of ships.
SHIP 1: Klingons! Drop your shields!
KLINGON SHIP: Hold on, hold on…we’re all super drunk over here.

i do this, but my criteria is less “how big is the pot” and more “is *everything* going my way” - those days where you get the best parking spot and everything runs on time and the restaurant gives you a free dessert, etc etc? those are the days i’ll go buy a lotto ticket lol. so once a year maybe

i typically read about 4-5 books at the same time, and it’s always interesting when i end up with a couple that share character traits or themes. right now, ive got three quite different ones featuring mute characters.

everybody needs to be part of an organized social group of some sort. book club, bowling league, religious group, doesn’t matter - we all need some form of regular, structured, external social commitment to keep us able to self-regulate and provide needed support systems.

🌎 NASA's Artemis II mission has splashed down and all four astronauts are reported safe, bringing an end to a stunning flight around the moon. www.scientificamerican.com/article/nasa...

Humanity did that. Science did that. Publicly-funded research did that. Excellent universities did that. Diversity did that. International cooperation did that.

Artemis II is a perfect example of what we can do at our best.

Welcome home, Integrity crew!

Like I’ve seen people go “even ChatGPT knows this is wrong!” and obligingly show it to me.

No. You’ve just used it. You’ve just fed it your query. You’ve used the computing power. They don’t care what your attitude is toward it.

i feel like i have seen at least four different rounds of “BLUESKY IS DYING” in the 18 mos or so i’ve been here, and my experience has only continued to improve 🤷‍♀️ it’s like the “tumblr is dying” waves that sweep through annually and change nothing

I feel like a lot of this is hyper-consumerism. Like: How do I hack reading? How do I get a better deal? How do I beat the system that’s trying to trick me into reading extra pages? How do I prove that I am not dumb enough to just read the book the way they hand it to me, like a chump?

13. In short, all writing is political, because all writers are political, and so are all readers. We can't help ourselves in either case. It doesn't matter if you're writing a narrow polemic or an attempted blockbuster. It's okay to be comfortable with these facts; they exist even if you're not.
