This process must be legal, proportionate and aimed at creating a legal framework for independent public media journalism which rebuilds public trust. IPI is committed to supporting this process.
Tisza has a historic opportunity to model the re-democratisation of the public media in a way that strengthens rule of law and improves media freedom and pluralism, and provides a blueprint for other countries seeking to reform their media ecosystems in line with democratic principles and standards.
This has deprived the Hungarian public of their right to independent news and information, as guaranteed by Hungarian and EU law.
For more than a decade, the public media in Hungary has acted as a direct propaganda channel for the Fidesz government, excluding any diverse opinions and voices, and spreading disinformation and dangerous attacks on independent media and institutions at scale.
IPI has long called for a systematic reform of Hungary’s public media which realigns the news service with its independent public service mandate, in line with the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) and international standards.
But we urge the future administration to ensure that all changes are achieved by following the rule of law - as Tisza has publicly committed to - and carried out transparently and with full and meaningful consultation with the media, civil society and legal experts.
🇭🇺 #Hungary: Following the Tisza party leader and future Prime Minister Peter Magyar's statement today about his incoming government’s plans to suspend the news programming of the public broadcaster after it takes office, IPI stresses the need for systemic reform measures.

IPI urges Congress to implement reforms of Section 702 that prevent governmental overreach and protect the civil liberties of all Americans.

“Voting to reauthorize Section 702 under the current administration would essentially hand the president a new tool with which to go after members of the press for any reporting the administration does not like,” said John Daniszewski, chair of IPI's North American Committee.
Misuse and abuse of Section 702 to surveil and target Americans – including journalists – are well-documented, while concerns about leaks have made sources inside and outside the U.S. less inclined to speak to American journalists, particularly on national security matters.
🇺🇸 #USA: As FISA Section 702 is set to expire in the coming week, IPI urges Congress to oppose reauthorization of the statute until necessary reforms that would protect journalists’ privacy and communications can be made.
