The destruction of the #EastWing is the worst US historical loss to a “planned” demolition since the #SingerBuilding. This did not go through regular channels and is not doing best practices for work on or near a historic building. Anyone telling you otherwise is ignorant or lying. #whitehouse

Never seems good when we see an uptick in web traffic to the primary source "Can a State Constitutionally Secede?" 🫠
Pliny writes to Trajan, asking him for the means to fight fires in Nicomedia.

This photograph shows an drawing, spread across two pages of History Today. The whole drawing is very red. It shows a skeleton in a suit, holding a spider over a working-class man's head, while pouring him a glass of absinthe. Behind the man's right shoulder is a row of grave and a black bird, in flight. On the right hand side, it says: "History Matters".
This photograph shows the cover of the December issue of "History Today". On a red background, there is a drawing Byzantine Emperor in extravagant golden clothes. Next to him, it says "A Christmas to save the Byzantine Empire".
So exciting to have the December issue of

Stumbled upon this awesome blog post about corsets and stays. Also, indie authors will continue to write and publish historical romance, so don't worry.

As I mention frequently re #GameofThrones, folks like my student Savannah Shipman established that rape convictions were higher in 1300s England than U.S. today. Roman law forbade cat-calling women! If we represent the past as undiluted Misogynia, we implicitly excuse current law/norms as "Better."
A nitrile gloved right hand holds a fibula (brooch) in the shape of a crossbow, showing the side where the museum accession numbers of two different generations were inscribed. "GB346" is the older number and crisply readable while "927.15.132" the newer accession number, is chipped and not as distinct, especially the 7 and the 5. Fibula is black-brown, numbers are in white ink, background is grey.
When the old number GB346 stays on the object better than the new number 927.15.132 you're glad the database is searchable for both! It's not bad really but it happens often. Crossbow fibula from Winchester, UK, 300-400 CE in the @romtoronto.bsky.social collection.

Depiction of a white snake emerging from water (oil art in black and white)
In East Slavic old beliefs, snakes and birds are cult animals.
In fact, there is enough evidence to consider that a snake was seen as the totemic ancestor if not by all, than at least by some of the East Slavic peoples.

There are two large mounds of dark brown rock that have indentations carved into the rock to facilitate climbing over the rock in a dip between the mounds. It's very steep and would still be a difficult climb in my opinion! At the base of the mounds is a large hole carved into the rock, perhaps the start of some sort of dwelling. There is another larger rock behind these mounds, and the sky is deep blue with puffy white clouds.
Have a great #RockinTuesday all!
These rocks are in Cappadocia, Turkey. It's an amazing place with so many unique rock formations and cave houses.

This is one of my favorite, low-tech, ways of visualizing the past! Doesn't oversell the reconstruction, shows possible past and present in same view, works, rain or shine and without power.

A pair of beautiful #Roman glass cups, in a bluey-green glass with white & gold 'snaking' decoration. Found near Köln (Germany), they're a lovely example of the glassware made by skilled craftsmen on the Rhine - and absolutely do not look their 1700+ years of age! AncientBlueSky
Detail of an ancient Roman mosaic showing an eel. What’s that got to do with Vedius Pollio? Well, we recommend our new book ‘Your Cheeky Guide to the Roman Empire’ for all the salacious details!
In the Roman republic, Vedius Pollio gained quite a reputation for treating his slaves badly… but it also turns out that Vedius’ dad had been a slave.
Someone get Freud on the line!
