As the 1st Conference on Transitioning Away From Fossil Fuels is about to start, a major yet little-known blocker needs attention: #ISDS
ISDS lets big polluters sue states over climate action, sabotaging the just transition we need.
+300 organisations agree: it's a threat to our collective futureπ
This system is completely legal and standing in the way of public good and a just energy transition.
If governments are serious about phasing out fossil fuels, they must confront and dismantle ISDS. βοΈ
Here's our roadmap for governments: www.somo.nl/investor-pro...

The oil giants are now using ISDS to sue the Dutch state and claim billions for the shutdown of the gas field.
All while:
π© denying their responsibility for the harms caused
π© refusing to fully compensate affected communities
(3/4)
ISDS allows foreign investors like big polluters to sue governments in private courts when public interest policies affect their profits.
In Groningen, the Netherlands, communities have lived with the consequences of gas extraction by Shell and ExxonMobil for decades.
(2/4)
Imagine your house is cracking because of gas extraction nearby...
...And when your government finally steps in to protect you, it gets sued by the gas companies β οΈ
Welcome to the upside-down world of Investor-State Dispute Settlement (#ISDS).

11 Canadian corporate groups will have to comply with the EU's Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive when it comes into force. Check out @somoamsterdam.bsky.social 's excellent datahub for more information!
New consumer-led litigation: Dutch consumers are challenging Levi's over misleading claims about responsible production and respect for workersβ rights, including the right to freely join a trade union. Read more by @somoamsterdam.bsky.social & @cleanclothes.bsky.social. www.somo.nl/levis-sued-o...
Groundbreaking lawsuit against Levi Strauss NL B.V. and Levi Strauss & Co EU BV πΌ
Leviβs presented itself as an ethical brand by claiming responsible production.
The reality: Workers protesting at a Turkish factory faced violence & dismissal.

Absolutely, this has been on the radar for a long time. Itβs striking how unknown or overlooked ISDS still is by many. It's key to keep bringing more attention to it within fossil fuel transition debates.
Great that others are also pushing this issue forward!
If The Netherlands is serious about phasing out fossil fuels, it must take the lead in dismantling legal barriers like ISDS. π¨
Together with @bothends.bsky.social, we've developed a roadmap for states to do so in the context of a fossil fuel phase out:

Billions have already been claimed by investors through ISDS. That's taxpayer money.
And there's one country that plays a major role in the ISDS system.
Ironically, that same country is co-hosting the First Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels:
The Netherlands π³π±

An unknown, but very legal tool is blocking climate action and the fossil fuel phase out:
π Investor State Dispute Settlement, or ISDS.
ISDS allows foreign investors - like big polluters - to sue states when public policies affect their investments and profits.

ENI has filed another SLAPP lawsuit against the organisation @recommon.org in a desperate attempt to silence them.
Multinational companies are intensifying their attacks during these chaotic times to silence and threaten organisations. This is beyond disgraceful!!

Weβre proud to support this lawsuit against telecoms giant Telenor to get justice for customers in Myanmar whose sensitive data was shared with the Myanmar military during its crackdown on activists following the 2021 coup.
Landmark litigation: Myanmar customers sue Telenor for sharing private data with military
In this groundbreaking class action lawsuit against Norwegian telecoms giant Telenor, Myanmar customers seek damages for the sharing of data with the military junta, which led to arrests, torture & executions
Two years ago we filed a criminal complaint against Booking.com, accusing the company of laundering profits from listings in illegal Israeli settlements.
During that time, the prosecutor has failed to make a decision on the matter.
π¨ The Dutch Court must decide now!

Myanmar customers are suing Norwegian telecoms giant Telenor ASA π¨
The company didn't prevent its subsidiary in Myanmar from handing customer data to the military junta.
This led to surveillance, arbitrary detention, and torture, and at least one customer was executed.

Real resilience isnβt about securing more, but needing less π₯
As more sectors compete for the same critical minerals, the EU's focus is on securing greater supply.
But, what's a better path for the EU?
- Reduce demand
- use fewer materials
- rethink key sectors

Google, Amazon, Meta refuse to disclose the intermediaries they use to hire data workers.
To break this secrecy @somoamsterdam.bsky.social analysed 100s of documents, incl. press reports, trade union statements, annual accounts & promo materials.

Weβre updating the CSDDD Datahub π
The update will reflect the Omnibus I revision and show which corporations will need to comply with the CSDDD by 2029, and should start preparing now.
It'll be available on 14 April. Watch this space! π

Very important new research about how Big Tech firms shape the labor conditions of data workers globally.
Among other recommendations: βGovernments can use their leverage to protect data workers, such as by pressuring companies through public procurement to be transparent & responsible."
Super useful reporting. When there's talk about AI for good, sovereign AI, or even alternative social networks, not enough is said about improving the conditions of the data workers that actually make it all possible
Thank you π
AI data work is booming. But according to @somoamsterdam.bsky.social so are its precarious conditions.
Workers that label, clean, and train #AI (often in the global south) face low pay, unsafe conditions & weak protections. We need a counterweight to this global race to the bottom on labour rights.
Big Tech relies heavily on thousands of data workers for their AI products.
While these workers are hired through intermediaries, Big Tech firms are responsible for their unstable and unfair working conditions.π¨
