Imagine the following scenario. You are mentoring a student, and they come to you asking you to solve a coding problem. You help them, walking through the solution step by step. They then come back and
ask you to solve another problem. And then another. Eventually, you might pause as you recognize that something is going wrong. You realize that your student isn’t learning how to code and is simply
learning to rely on your help. You subsequently sit them down and talk about the value of persisting through challenges, of practicing new skills, and what it actually means to learn.

This scenario highlights a fundamental aspect of human collaboration. Good collaborators optimize for long-term objectives (Bratman, 1992; Grosz & Kraus, 1996; Balcazar & Keys, 2014; Mattessich & Johnson,
2018). For example, a mentor encourages independent development by adjusting the type of help given and sometimes offering no help at all. In essence, the best collaborators maintain a balance between
helping and fostering autonomy; they know when not to help (Koedinger & Aleven, 2007; Van de Pol et al., 2010; Soderstrom & Bjork, 2015).

Current AI assistants are a stark contrast to this dynamic. They never refuse to help (unless for safety reasons), and provide instant answers to almost any query, across domains ranging from writing to coding to tutoring (Brynjolfsson et al., 2025; Buc¸inca et al., 2024; OECD, 2026; Shapira et al., 2026). In this sense, AI systems are fundamentally short-term collaborators: extraordinarily helpful in the moment, but
indifferent to what that help does to the person receiving it over time

From the study -- this distinction between helpful human mentorship + collaboration vs. what chatbots provide to people by default is really striking:

‘I wished for death’: Sexual violence in Israel’s prisons is an ‘organised state policy’
Palestinian testimonies reveal how sexual violence, including rape using objects and dogs, is approved by 'highest levels' of Israeli leadership

‘I wished for death’: Sexual violence in Israel’s prisons is an ‘organised state policy’ Palestinian testimonies reveal how sexual violence, including rape using objects and dogs, is approved by 'highest levels' of Israeli leadership

The testimony here about sexual violence by Israel against Palestinian prisoners is so beyond the pale everyone must see it.

It is so bad I can’t in good conscience share a quote other than the headline, which somehow manages to understate the horror within.

You have more in common with the people of Iran than you do with anyone in this administration, any member of the technocracy, anyone who is profiting from this war, or any billionaire. When you see Iranians forming human chains outside key infrastructure sites, you should feel a sense of kinship.

No hate to this lady in particular, but annihilating people and taking their resources is what America does. From the genocides it's founded on, to the slavery that propelled its rise to imperial power, to the global "interventions" post-WW2.

It's not just Trump. The US is a terror state.

let's be clear about what's happening: donald trump and benjamin netanyahu, whose countries have been committing genocide in gaza since 2023, unilaterally started a war with iran, and are now threatening genocide there.

Earthset captured through the Orion spacecraft window at 6:41 p.m. EDT, April 6, 2026, during the Artemis II crew’s flyby of the Moon. A muted blue Earth with bright white clouds sets behind the cratered lunar surface. The dark portion of Earth is experiencing nighttime. On Earth’s day side, swirling clouds are visible over the Australia and Oceania region. In the foreground, Ohm crater has terraced edges and a flat floor interrupted by central peaks. Central peaks form in complex craters when the lunar surface, liquefied on impact, splashes upwards during the crater’s formation.

Sycophantic AI decreases prosocial intentions and promotes dependence Despite rising concerns about sycophancy—excessive agreement or flattery from artificial intelligence (AI) systems—little is known about its prevalence or consequences. We show that sycophancy is wide...

"...even a single interaction with sycophantic AI reduced participants’ willingness to take responsibility and repair interpersonal conflicts, while increasing their own conviction that they were right."
