Photo of a farm, with a Prius parked on a sandy lane next to a pasture of black Angus cows & calves. A calf is walking up close to the car and reaching its head out to sniff it.

-HBO prestige drama set on an RFK Jr ADHD ranch, revolving around residents' attempts to escape

this sounds like it should be a movie

it's not

it's a weekly TV series

new escape attempt every week because untreated ADHD 😭

Thanks to long days on the farm this past week, I've had a lot of time think. Here are some of the worst ideas I've had so far:

-Farm mockumentary a la Clarkson's Farm, but in the style of Veep

I am looking forward to watching this bc I have spent plenty of time trying to explain to people how trees are produced at wholesale growers in order to disabuse people of this narrative.

So they dummymandered Hungary?

Yeah, gerrymandering works great in years when voters are apathetic. Guaranteed modest win in most districts.

When they're pissed off though, "guaranteed modest win in every district" becomes a death sentence for exactly the party it was supposed to help.

Whil we’re waiting to see what happens in the Hungarian election, here’s something I wrote in 2013 about Orbán attacking cultural dissenters and handing control of arts institutions to loyalists. Remarkable how much of this has now been replicated in the US www.newyorker.com/books/page-t...

Viktor Orban accomplished so much of what the Trump movement wants to accomplish here

he ruled for 16 years and rewrote the rules in his favor

and still, they threw him out

and you know what? they did it by voting

don’t let anyone tell you voting doesn’t matter

Orbán’s defeat is also great news for Ukraine, which has been waiting for the EU money Hungary has been blocking

In competitive authoritarianism, leaders abuse state power to tilt the electoral playing field in their favor, manipulate the media environment and minimize opposition voices, maybe even steal close elections by lying about fraud. But they usually can't overcome a large majority voting against them.

Again there's simply no comparison between the scope, scale, & tone of the JOE BIDEN EPICALLY AND INCOMPETENTLY FAILED IN AFGHANISTAN coverage of August/September 2021 & the "just the facts, very measured" reporting of what's going on with Iran & Trump now.

This is the culmination of SIXTEEN YEARS of dogged work by everyday Hungarians.

You think that felt hopeless sometimes? I'm sure it did.

👏 Don't 👏 give 👏 up 👏

It turns out there is a way JD Vance can singlehandedly advance peace in the Middle East: Start campaigning for Netanyahu.

Screenshot of the preview that Patreon shows for this post. The thumbnail is cropped so that instead of "Botanical Sexism" it says "ANICAL SEX," and the blurb says "This is the not-safe-for-YouTube version."

(this cut is in fact nsfy, but only because of a little light swearing)(there's a lot of plant sex science in here but I don't think YT has a problem w that)
