🧵 Democracy feels like it's in a rough state at the moment across the globe, and we hear various explanations, like polarisation, extremism, disinformation, and loss of trust. But what if those explanations are mainly symptoms and we've been trying to treat them rather than the underlying causes?

Poem - 'On Turning Ten' by Billy Collins

Poem - 'On Turning Ten' by Billy Collins

Posting this on my birthday

The poem treats the 10th birthday as a quiet loss, a stepping out of childhood

This small shift, from 9 – 10, shows how growing up happens quietly & gradually

Full of humour & nostalgia & then ending with something deeper & more philosophical

In Democracy in America, de Tocqueville comes across an (already) deserted settler home in the Eastern USA (on an island in a lake, from memory) and his reaction was "Quoi! Deja des ruines?" - I used it as an epigraph in my book of poems about conflict, as almost seemed like a prophesy... #fragility

'Nothing good ever came from being the first one in. More people have walked on the moon than have won from the number one position, remember that.'

Two things here.

One, you don't sit there and whine about media coverage and headlines if things are going well.

Two, the administration is just outright saying that they fully expect Ellison to use CNN to be a Trumpist propaganda organ.

Figurines of Brady Bunch and Partridge Family fighting each other

I have created a diorama of the Partridge family attacking the Brady Bunch family. My life is very boring.
