The market is just depressing at the moment and with the rising numbers of redundancies you've got more experienced colleagues also competing for "entry" academic posts.

Academia definitely give you the option for "bulk download" but not sure whether that's via person or just their recommended "these articles go together" - some suggest the best way seems to be to enable "pdf download" on your reference manager as the easiest option...
