SEND tribunals soar by 55% and almost all side with families Ministry of Justice reports 21,000 SEN appeals in 2023-24, up from less than 14,000 the year before

The number of tribunal appeals over local authority refusals to provide SEND support for children has rocketed by 55 per cent in a year, and the vast majority still find in favour of families

Reality check:
- teacher training targets missed for last five years
- record numbers leaving the profession

Pay and funding is absolutely central to reversing these trends.

Labour announces £700m to improve access to mainstream schools for students with SEND. That’s approx £35,000 per school. It’s not enough and it’s not sustainable. The whole system needs to change. Scrapping high stakes testing and accountability measures would immediately improve access.
