A cartoon-style drawing shows two cats sitting in front of a pet carrier. One cat says: “I go in, and when I come out I’m at the vet… then I go back in, and when I come out I’m home…” The other cat responds: “Could it be? A wormhole!”

La Chine… 🤔
Régulièrement, je vois passer des vidéos postées par des étrangers qui glorifient la Chine et tout ce que l’on peut y trouver. Il y a indéniablement beaucoup de bon côté, mais il y a aussi des comportements comme ceux-là.

over 5 million primary school aged children in China can't live with their migrant parents because they can't get a school place in their parents' city, a group called "left-behind children".
but now cities actually have more school places than needed bc of declining birth rates...

Lüshun Museum is seriously underrated. It’s a beautiful piece of architecture, built by the Japanese in 1917, and has a very impressive collection of bronzes and other artifacts
To my non tech normies, PSA: when you share a link, everything after the ? is tracking. Those “query parameters” tell companies exactly how you arrived, what app you clicked, which ad or email sent you, sometimes a unique identifier tied to you. You can delete everything after the question mark.

The poplars (Populus tomentosa) that produce these seed clusters were planted in the 1960s and 70s when Beijing suffered from such severe dust storms the city was on the brink of desertification.
The female trees (which vastly outnumber the male) produce about a kilogram of this white fluff.

if these Ru-speakers were so close to Russia, and convinced that "the West" was really at fault for the war, why are they in Riga and not in Novgorod? In Warsaw instead of Moscow? In Lviv instead of Sotchi?

If you take a look at your feet while exploring various natural beauties of UNESCO Geoparks in Zhangjiajie, you'll see calcified, coiled or straight & ribbed structures. They are so common, the quarried rock they are part of is dubbed "Chinese hornstone" 🧵

Polacy na Dalekim Wschodzie, Grochowski, Kazimierz, Harbin 1928
This flag symbolized the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER), a joint Sino-Russian venture established under the 1896 Li–Lobanov Treaty, which granted Russia a concession to build a railway through Manchuria. Adopted in 1897, it served as the official emblem for the Russian-managed company, displaying its authority at railway stations and facilities like those in Harbin.

A thread 🧵 on Polish palaeontologists in Harbin
There used to be (~30k strong) Polish population in the city of Harbin (哈尔滨), during Russian occupation of North China & partition of Poland. The population was composed of Socialist Poles who were banished as punishment for anti-Tsarist uprisings.
Polish community in North China, concentrated in Harbin, was composed of wealthy, educated migrants and political exiles. Creating a perfect mix of resourced, educated, nationalist diaspora. With Polish schools, chruch, press and theatre, which'd been otherwise "illegal" in Russian Empire proper.
