This is wild!

Seven-day-ahead weather forecasts in high-income countries are more accurate than one-day-ahead weather forecasts in low-income countries.

I appreciate the WSJ following up on this story, which is already in danger of being one of many forgotten scandals in elite academia.

Thank you! Did not know you have a substack, too!

At Our World in Data, we spend much of our time counting deaths.

But it’s just as important to know the number of lives saved — even though it is harder to estimate and involves much larger uncertainty.

My Data Insight today includes this chart of some estimates.

Sorry, I don't know. I guess that LISER will clarify soon!

As far as I understand, they are gone for good. I am not aware of any attempt to save these parts.

It's fantastic that the network is saved.

But IZA as an institute closing down is still a tremendous loss

Definitely so! Shutting down the DP series would have been a terrible loss. And @liser.lu is a great place to host the network!

8 months ago 2 0 0 0

Yet, I am still extremely sad about IZA's main assets - the institute itself, its postdoc program, it's Berlin and Bonn campus, the guest program and the workshop series - being cancelled. It remains a big loss.

I am super happy about the IZA network and DP series having found a new home at @liser.lu . Having visited in the past, I think LISER is the kind of place IZA could (and should ) have been. I wish them all the best!

Unfortunately, the "institute" itself has not found a new home. only its most tangible assets, the network and the discussion paper series, remain. Its postdoc program, the international campus in Bonn with its vibrant guest program, the workshop series, and the summer school, remain lost.

Nonetheless, I am very happy to see that those parts surviving have found a new home at @liser.lu : that place already now displays the kind of research institute IZA could have been with necessary support. I wish them all the best!

To be clear: the "institute" itself has not found a new home—only its most tangible assets, the network, the discussion paper series, remain. What moreover defined IZA, its postdoc program, the campus in Bonn with its vibrant guest program, the workshop series, and the summer school, has been lost.

Hi, all! Looking for recommendations for asynchronous courses or self-paced learning materials (not just books or slides but also including exercises) for learning R and Python relevant to academic uses in business and economics research! TIA #EconSky

I remember an earlier discussion of this paper here or at the old place, about what creepy complier population we are dealing here with.

Wir brauchen eine Baumoffensive in unseren Städten. Bäume sorgen für ein angenehmes Stadtklima und bremsen die Klimakatastrophe . #StädteFürMenschen 🌳🌳🌳

Cool thing: @ihs.ac.at produces its own honey – and gifts it to presenters. 🍯🐝

Great audience and comments, too!

Visiting the @ihs.ac.at in Vienna these days. Highly recommended office situation given the heat! Thank you, @kbekhtiar.bsky.social and Holger Bonin for the invitation.

Today, the German Federal Election Officer released data on voting by age and gender for the 2025 election. Contrary to popular belief, AfD support is still not strongest among the youngest voters, but rather among the middle-aged (males). Support is also still much lower in older cohorts. (1/3) 🧵

Does anyone else observe increasing bullshitting with ChatGPT? I use it extensively to summarize research papers, but in several occasions over the past weeks, it just hallucinates a completely different paper than the one I provide, even if I ask several times. I did not notice this before.

I had the great pleasure to attend the CEPR Labor Symposium in Berlin and to present the joint project with @ingoisphording.bsky.social and Miriam Gensowski on mental health challenges among teachers.
