My review on the "Confidence-accuracy dissociations in perceptual decision making" is now published. I think that this will be useful to both experts and newcomers to the field.

To accompany my textbook (Computational Foundations of Cognitive Neuroscience) and the class I taught this semester, I'm open-sourcing my lectures slides:

I'll continue to update these as I improve them.
Beautiful paper by Tingting Wu and @qing-yu.bsky.social suggesting reduced top-down influence from IPS to EVC during imagery and VWM maintenance in aphantasia: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Really delighted to have been awarded a Mid-Career Fellowship by the @britishacademy.bsky.social , which I’ll be using to work on a new book about the human imagination 🧠
Our work on how neural circuits in the cerebellum encode prior probabilities led by Julius Koppen is out now in Nature Neuroscience www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Big thanks to Julius Koppen & the whole team! And dedicated to all of us who found inspiration in Bayesian theories of the brain!
The Obleser lab will be hiring soon!
New postdoc (fully funded) and
new PhD or part-time postdoc position (soft-money funded).
Spread the word. Start in Sept/Oct.
Watch out for official announcements!
Please be in touch.

Evidence accumulation is a core principle by which brains convert information into decisions. But what happens when the evidence the brain needs can't be directly read from an external stimulus or memory? 1/N

Alex Martin talking about his science career
Alex Martin talked about his "eclectic" career spanning over 4 decades, including 31 years in the Laboratory of Cognition (NIH), with some reflections on what makes a successful scientific career: "the right place at the right time", "it's good to be first", "controversy is helpful"
New paper in Imaging Neuroscience by Yuanyuan Weng, Jelmer P. Borst, and Elkan G. Akyürek:
Sustained alpha oscillations serve attentional prioritization in working memory, not maintenance

Classic example of Iranian grit and intentionality:
Sharif Uni may have been bombed but that is no excuse to stop class! Math professor in his bombed office yesterday giving his scheduled lecture online for the randomized algorithm course
Academic friends,
It's beyond heartbreaking to watch what's unfolding in Iran & the region.
A few of us drafted an open letter calling for protection of civilians & of educational, research, medical & cultural institutions.

Darcy told me just yesterday! I’m thrilled, and so happy for you!!!
I'm SO pleased to announce that I'll be starting as an Asst Prof at @psychiowa.bsky.social this August.
The lab will focus on neural & computational mechanisms of motivation, affect, & decision-making, with the aspirational goal of translation to neuropsychiatric disorders. 🧠

Come join us! We have two research coordinator positions open with the Stanford IRISS predoctoral program, a program designed to mentor students for graduate study:
LEVANTE: careersearch.stanford.edu/jobs/iriss-p...
BabyView: careersearch.stanford.edu/jobs/iriss-p...
(deadline 5/1)
Some reports say over 500 schools, 55 libraries, & 25 universities hit.
You can debate the numbers, but hitting Sharif University & Beheshti is like hitting MIT & Stanford. I keep wondering: How would the scientific community respond differently if it was those universities? What’s the difference?
JOB ALERT: PhD opening in my lab!

in Italy, as part of an Italian FIS3 starting grant.
The project will use advanced analysis methods of MEG data to investigate how our world's naturalistic hierarchical structure facilitates predictive neural processing.

📢 PhD position in the @cognition-zurich.bsky.social at University of Zurich
I’ve been part of the lab for 7+ years, and it’s a genuinely collaborative and supportive place to grow as a researcher and do research on working memory and cognition 👇
I've been named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, for "distinguished contributions to the field of neuroscience and neuropsychology particularly in the area of neurodegenerative diseases." Thanks to my great students and collaborators! I feel a like a celebrity.
Incredibly honored to be named a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
This distinction recognizes the work of my students and trainees over the years.
Congratulations to the other Vanderbilt faculty elected AAAS Fellows as well.
embargo period of 12 months
GAH! My R01 is being held up for public access non-compliance for two articles. All articles must be deposited in PubMed Central with zero embargo, but the publisher (in this case Elsevier) sets the embargo time. Has anyone encountered this issue? Open access papers are not embargoed, right? GAH
