Research spotlight for Rachael Nicholas, with her face and the title of the Outstanding Graduate Paper: “Virginia Should Not Call in Vain”: Perceptions of Slavery and Freedom and their Impact on Black Movement during the Maryland Campaign
Quotes from Rachael: The award bolstered my confidence as a scholar and opened channels of communication with other academics I would not have known to approach. Those academics helped me improve my dissertation...and gave me access to other platforms to develop my work...the commentator... recommended me as a panelist to one of her graduate students...at the SHA." Picture of Rachael at a cemetery.
Quote from Rachael's paper, with a picture of Rachael in her National parks Service uniform. Quote reads: “The perception of Maryland as a secessionist state struggling under the weight of Union oppression shaped the encounters African Americans did and did not have with Confederate soldiers during the Maryland Campaign.”
Rachael in her NPS uniform and a quote from her paper: Enslaved men and women joined the flight of free people of color during the Maryland Campaign. Three elements came together to facilitate their escapes: the Confederacy’s liberation policy, which generally left Maryland slaves to their own devices; the chaos of battle, which distracted terrified slaveholders; and the Union army’s penchant for ignoring official “contraband” policies.
For our 40th Anniversary Campaign, we are highlighting the excellent work, awards, and initiatives that the SCWH makes possible! Donate here: scwh.memberclicks.net/donate-to-th...
