Instead of going for literal translations like "Zaraza' or 'Plaga' (which both have connotations with sickness) our Polish team opted for a made-up word: "Szarzyca". "Sniezyca" means snow storm and "szary" means grey. Therefore, the mash up of the two, "Szarzyca" evokes a grey storm... An ash storm!
Focusing on that same ash storm idea, our Spanish team chose "Grisacea" An existing adjective meaning "of grey colour". In the context of the game, it sounds both literary and quite ominous, perfectly fitting the medieval tone.
To avoid the rather common and overly used "Plage" or "Seuche" (sickness/plague), our German team went with: "Hauch." It means "light breath" and is often combined with the word for death: "Hauch des Todes", meaning "Death's Breath". It sounds poetic and also fits the medieval atmosphere.
In Chinese, the most commonly used translation for Blight sounds like a basic infection, not like an ominous cataclysm. As in Polish, our team went for a made-up word: ็ฐ็ซ Literally, "ash blight". It both keeps the ash blight and adds the missing natural disaster vibe!
In Of Ash and Steel, you're stranded on an island because of a cyclical volcanic storm called... the "Blight"๐ช๏ธ
A terrific name!
Blight evokes a natural disease, decay and ruin all at once. But how to convey this feeling of doom without literal translations? Insight into our PL, ES, DE & CN loc๐ก ๐๏ธ
"First they came for the translators, and I did not speak out, because I was not a translator."
Good thing the dev is multilingual and able to review the texts in 10 (ten) different languages and all their cultural subtleties.
Really, what could go wrong?
A picture of a LinkedIn post that says: Fellow gameloc specialists, how much reference material do you usually get from the end client when starting a new project? LinkedIn doesn't allow long descriptions in polls, so read them below before casting your vote :) 1 - None: Nothing. Nada. Zilch. (Excluding standard stuff like the title... If you're lucky) 2 - Minimal: A 2-paragraph outline and a few reference screenshots, perhaps a trailer 3 - Partial: A script with dialogues in order, character reference sheets, game design documents outlining all mechanics and core concepts of the game 4 - Full: All of the above and a playable build with cheat codes I understand this can vary widely from one project/client to another, hence why I'm looking for an average. Stay tuned for the results in a couple of weeks and feel free to share this post to gather as many opinions as possible! Disclaimer: Your answers are disclosed to the poll's author (me). When publishing the results, I'll make sure they're all anonymized.

Placeholder assets in a game should look obnoxiously temporary, so obvious that no one would mistake it for the final asset. In past games we've used the doge dog (rip) as an icon, hot pink versions of characters, our CEO's head, etc.
If you use a temp asset that seems passable, it may stay there.

Again: something LLMs will structurally never be able to do.
"Language-learning enhances empathy, so when we turn away from the act of translation, we likewise turn away from the acts of learning about and engaging deeply with other cultures and societies."
Localization = genuinely understanding a source text & making it understandable for other cultures.
