McCollaugh's 1776 book describes Washington taking control of the army in Boston and being more worried about public health and sanitation than the British at least in the moment. History is littered as you rightly imply.

And, the jobs discourse leads quickly and directly to the framing of universities as out of touch with the common folk and derilect of their duty in terms of academic programs.

There is, as someone in one of these contexts, a much more subtle issue. The very second that higher education became primarily about jobs, the political implications were a fait accompli. There was no way that publics were going to extract themselves from that discourse after accepting the premise.

Agree, but it was on its way out even then.

Spent my young scholarly life sending out papers (facing staunch opposition) and having to convince people that bureaucracies made policy. Now, we reap the whirlwind. Every political debate, in my entire life, has been about who controls the bureaucracy and how much of it we have.

You have to understand the state of things before you can adapt, adjust, and strategize around it. 4/4

Even if you disagree with the public, you understand, navigate, and adapt to this through insights primarily garnered through social science. It's just as vital for conservative priorities as for progressive priorities and projects. 3/4

Conservative state legislators and governors often need to understand how to frame and argue for various investments in economic sectors or for priority projects. The key to getting a handle on the state of things is social science. 2/4

This is an excellent defense (or proactive argument for) of the social sciences. I want to add something as someone who works in a slightly different role than a typical academic. 1/4

COVID matters for sure. By now, I also think #AI is at least part of the story as well. No one in the animal kingdom works hard when they don't have to - and nothing is more taxing than thinking.

Context matters. If I'm ordering out, the last thing I want is something healthy.

This is spot on. I find it funny when people say you always "get your money back after a downtown." You do, but you don't get the time and the compound interest back. It's gone forever. People of a certain age have had their accounts wiped 3-4 times. We know the answer to the question already.

Need party centered theories of implementation. Or not, then punt on policy, and then it's all comms.

6 days ago 1 0 0 0

Agree with this too.

6 days ago 2 0 0 0

I agree with this. There was nothing at all wrong with the aims and goals. But, and it's a party problem, not a Biden problem, they have to have a theory of implementation that accounts for federalism x polarization. They don't currently. And as a discipline, we haven't helped supply one.

Pistachio smoked Turkey on a cutting board.

Folks laud Texas for brisket, but folks sleep on Texas Smoked Turkey (never had it before living there). Given beef prices, went with some pistachio smoked Turkey.

No it can't. And in the private sector for SBE type projects, they aren't interested in basic science at all. They're interested in the science that can inform how to get what they want - framing, priming, etc. Almost entirely applied science in these realms. Or, social science as a tool of comms.
